Nausea from coffee drinks? Why?

Hi All! Anyone who knows me knows I love coffee!  Pre-surgery I was a Starbucks regular.  Three months after surgery, I resumed my coffee drinking habits, but with SF and decaf as my choices, always. However, I'm now 16 months post-op, and am now getting nauseous from my coffee drinks... what the heck??  Its happened 4 times now, at different times of the day:     - Twice was an iced SF breve, which is made with half-n-half, from a nearby local drive thru coffee place.     -Once was another SF breve at a mall coffee shop     -and the fourth time was my usual Starbucks SF Vanilla decaf latte, made with whole milk. The only thing I can think of is the dairy ?? Or too much fat in the milk/half-n-half?  For 16 months now I've been watching sugar, not fat...   If I'm suddenly lactose intolerant, that won't make sense, since I make protein shakes with milk and SF ice cream in them with no problems.  Also, it seems most post-ops find they're lactose intolerant sooner after surgery than 16 months later...  and I also thought that the symptoms of lactose intolerance is gas/bloating/diarrhea... ?  Not nauseousness... So why am I getting nauseous from my coffee drinks?? I don't want to give them up!! :(  But 3 of these times I was drinking the coffees while driving around doing errands, and I almost had to pull over because I was so nauseous that I became dizzy...

I suspect it is lactose intolerance.  When I drink milk products I get a stomach ache.  Funny thing is, I can eat sugar free yogurt and cottage cheese or regular cheese.  It is just milk that does it to me.

Hi Elaine- Thanks for responding.  Can nausea be a symptom of lactose intolerance?  Twice (of the 4 times it happened) I took a Tums and felt relief a bit later... which made me question if the acid from the expresso itself is getting to me?

My next idea was going to be the acidity of the coffee itself.  If a tums worked that could be it (esp. if you have developped an ulcer).  I am not one to run to a Dr. for everything but I would experiment to see if it is the fat, the milk base or the acidic coffee itself and see what happens.  Good Luck!

Order SF and Soy instead of dairy options and that will help determine if it has to do with dairy.  (Which it doesn't sound like - but you never know!)

Good idea!  I'll try soy today and see what happens.  But if I don't get sick from soy, then I'll question whether it was the FAT from the milk, or the milk itself, that got me sick...

If they're SF, you may be getting nauseated from whatever sugar alcohol is in the drinks, if they're flavored with SF syrup. Holly

But I've been living off of these same drinks almost daily for 16 months now... so I don't think its sugar alcohols.  Plus, I eat SF candies and other SF items with sugar alcohols in it, and no reaction...

it's prob the fat, ask for sf, fat free... i do those with no trouble and am generally lactose intolerant or have been but these are fine for me, and everyone carries at least two percent milk, half and half is way to heavy, however they do make fat free half and half you can use at home

You know, now that you mention it, I *DID* try the fat free half and half in my breve at one of those drive thru coffee places, about a week ago, and I didn't get sick!   However, I didn't like the drink either :) LOL it tasted so watery without the fat :) Yeah, I'm starting to think the fat might be what my tummy is reacting to... I used to focus on avoiding sugar, but now I might have to avoid both :(  Gah! Where's my fun? :)
