I stoped my Prozac the day befor surgery. I take 40mg per day. I am 4 weeks post op & I think I need to go back on my Prozac. My doctor said it is okay just make sure the capsule is small enough to go through my pouch. Well how do I know that? Does anyone else take prozac & do you think I will be okay?  Laura

Hi Laura,

I'd go by what your doc recommends. Just know that your RNY's malabsorptive properties may also affect Prozac's absorption. Really keep an eye on how you are feeling. If the 40mg doesn't seem to do it for you, don't be shy to tell your doc.

i am 11 days post op and i have been taking my prozac orally since the day after surgery.  my doctor has me open the capsules and mix it with applesauce.  It's very bitter but a chase it with some water and forget about it.   They do make prozac in liquid form, but my pharmacist said it is much more expensive.

I am pre-op and my doc told me that post-op I will need to continue taking my Prozac but just open the capsules and take it that way. Prozac should be weened off not just stopped abruptly while in the care of a physician.

As other posters suggested, open the capsule and mix it in with apple sauce or some s/f pudding and eat it.
If you think you need to be back on Prozac---then start back. Your body and mind are on the roller coaster of the year. We all need a little help keeping our heads straight.
BUT as always, when in doubt, call your doctor.

I had no problem swallowing pills. I figured once I was on solids the size of the food I was swallowing even chewed was just as big if not bigger than any pill.  ~Michelle

im 10 weeks post rny and ive been taking prozac 40 mg since the second day post op with no problems at all. the only thing id recommend is that you take them on an empty stomach as it can otherwise give you heartburn.

I am having Prozac liquid.  I have trouble with absorbson and this seems to be working so I would ask my Dr.  for the liquid prozac.
Dr. Clements saved me!!! Thank you Dr, Clements!!!  If life deals you lemons, make lemonade.   I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person  you want to annoy for the rest of your life.

There is a liquid form of prozac called fluexotine. It might be better for your pouch. Maybe ask your doctor to write you a pescription for it.
