Alli after gastric bypass

I had my surgery September 2005 and have lost 130 lbs.  I have 10 pesky lbs to lose and they are clinging to me like grim death.  I was just curious if anyone here has tried Alli and if it worked for them, or if the side effects were too horrible.  TIA!

I sure wouldn't take it without asking my doctor. I got all my information about Alli at the beauty shop (where everybody knows everything). Apparently, it makes people mess all over themselves wtihout even realizing they've done it. If that's the truth, I wouldn't take it to lose 10 pounds, no way.

There's been a couple of topics about this and from reading through them the cons far outweigh the pros.....Me, personally I don't know I haven't tried it.........I'm wondering about Leptopril

I took Leptopril before my surgery.  Had I of been successful with that, I wouldn't of had surgery.  I did lose 75 pounds with it but quickly gained back 25 right after I quit taking it.

I took it several years ago when it was called Xenical...it cramped my stomach...it causes oily  loose poop...Sometimes you can make it sometimes you can't....... I had Lap RNY August 10th. I would take anything without first talking to my surgeon.  My cousin is taking Alli now...she has been doing good with it.... she has lost about 15 pounds...but has stained almost every pain of panties she owns. With that being said.......ASK YOUR SURGEON FIRST....or go on the liquid diet..using 3 oz cups...like right after your surgery. Who knows it might just jump start your diet.             I AM NOT A DOCTOR OR NURSE...THESE ARE MY OPINIONS/ SUGGESTIONS

Work like you don't need the money......

I was on the prescription version of Alli (Xenical) a couple of years ago.   Alli works by blocking the absorption of a portion of your fat intake.  If you don't eat high fat foods, it will not make much of a difference for you.  You also will not have hardly any side effects if you fat intake is not high.  If you eat very high fat foods, it will help you lose those last 10.  However, when you stop taking Alli, if you continue to eat very high fat foods, you will gain the weight back.  You will also probably have the side effects. The side effects, to put it bluntly? Don't fart, even if you feel like you don't need to poop.  When you fart, (since Alli has blocked a certain percentage of fats from being absorbed) pure oil/fat will come out.  The oil/fat will look exactly as it did on the food you ate.  For example, if you ate pepporoni pizza, that red colored grease/oil/fat on top of each little slice of pepporoni will be what comes out of you when you fart/poop.   Even if you don't fart or poop, sometimes it will just run out of you.  No matter how tight your "pucker" is, oil/grease/fat can seep through - I promise.   I would recommend upping your exercise instead.

Yeah don't do it. Yuk.  Here's my experience with Xenical (Prescription stregth version of Alli). Maybe get a personal trainer for a few sessions and change up your exercise routine or go back to the nutritionist and get a new plan. Best of luck... oh check out the wls grads forum if you haven't already. You'll find lots of other 1+ year post-ops dealing with similar issues...

Here's a little something I wrote about it when it was announced back in February:

FDA Approves Orlistat for Over-the-Counter Use: Now you can crap your pants and pay to do so!

Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

Do not fear, you can now poop your pants with the help of newly over-the-counter available fat-blocker Orlistat, without ever setting foot in your doctors' office.  If greasy, pale, malodorous poops that stick to the bowl and never come off even with scrubbing and bleach are for YOU - please, take these meds.  If eating a Whopper and Onion Rings is your bag, make sure you take your newly renamed "Alli" first, so you can squirt fat globules out of your rear end until your anus bleeds and begs for mercy.

Why did the FDA approve this kind of med for over the counter sales?  Do you know what that means?  Kids will buy these.  They will find a way to buy this stuff to use it while dieting, like diuretics or energy pills.  You're going to have teenage girls binging after taking a fat-blocking "Alli" pill and crapping themselves in the bathroom stall while purging it up.  Why is it named a very feminine "Alli"?  Is it pronounced "Allie" like a little girl?  Is it going to have a feminine marketing campaign?  Perhaps they can sell the pills along with individually wrapped baby wipes for your rear end hygiene, because you know the "Alli" will give you that not-so-fresh sticky fecal feeling.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved orlistat capsules as an over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss aid for overweight adults.  Orlistat was initially approved in 1999 as a prescription drug to treat obesity, and remains a prescription drug for obesity at a higher dose than the OTC version.  OTC orlistat will be manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline under the name Alli and is indicated for use in adults ages 18 years and older along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, and exercise program.

We know that being overweight has many adverse consequences, including an increase in the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Douglas Throckmorton, Deputy Director for FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.  "OTC orlistat, along with diet and exercise, may aid overweight adults who seek to lose excess weight to improve their health."

OTC orlistat is not for people who have problems absorbing food or for those who are not overweight. Orlistat helps produce weight loss by decreasing the intestinal absorption of fat.  The 60 mg capsule can be taken up to three times a day with each fat-containing meal.  Because of the possible loss of certain nutrients, it is recommended that people using orlistat should also take a multivitamin at bedtime.

The most common side effect of the product is a change in bowel habits, which may include loose stools.  Eating a low fat diet will reduce the likelihood of this side effect.  Also, people who have had an organ transplant should not take OTC orlistat because of possible drug interactions.  In addition, anyone taking blood thinning medicines or being treated for diabetes or thyroid disease should consult a physician before using orlistat.

FDA approved OTC orlistat based on the review of the sponsor's safety data and after submitting the product for the consideration by an FDA advisory committee in January 2006. The committee voted in favor of OTC approval.

Notice, it tells you that eating a low-fat diet will reduce the symptoms of shtting yourself.  That is because this medication is meant to change your eating behavior by giving you a negative reaction to eating poor choices.  Eat fat = poop fat, and it feels bad.  You can feel sick.

I have a solution:  Smack yourself across the face every time you make poor food choices.  It will be cheaper, less messy, and it's that same negative reinforcement.

A few years back i'd say around 5 to 6 I took the first set of fat blockers  it wasn't called Ali back then and only your doctor could perscribe it .. I forget the name off hand but it is from the same company. And what they say is true it does block the fat from your foods and you poop oily runs  so if ya ate long john silvers fish like I did I about pottied in my pants I was a block from my moms and on my 3 mile walk back then I swore I must have had some powerful butt cheeks after that I stopped taking them plus I was only having a chicken or steak salad with normal dressing fat free so gross one a day with a cup of wedding soup or veggie soup .. I had to scrub  my toilet daily cause the oil clung to it..  and paying 160.00 for this became  more than i wanted to spend ..My suggestion for you to perhaps shock your body  as if you just had this surgery done I see peeps suggesting that  .. do the liquid diet for a few days back to the basics so to speak .. I hope this helps you and you have a great holiday...
