Anyone familar with Amitriptyline?

Neuro just prescibed this for back pain.  Side effect were extreme weight gain?!!!!!  Anyone out there use this or have used it in the past?  I would like to hear from you! Thanks, ANgie

Hey Angie... I used to take it many, many years ago.  I didn't take it long enough to notice any weight gain but it did make me sluggish and made me feel like I was walking around in a fog.  Maybe that's why you gain weight from it...you don't feel like doing anything. Hope your back gets to feeling better...I have degenerative disc disease and had to get a cage, rods and pins put in along my spine and neck.  Sounds bad..but since that surgery and losing all my weight from RNY...I haven't had a bit of back problems. take care, Dawn

My friend PJ takes it. It knocks her out like a freight train hit her.. Yes, she gained a lot of weight. From watching her on this medication, I would never take it. She's miserable but it's the only way she can get any sleep. She has Fibromyalgia

I was prescribed it once and it knocked me on my butt so hard I felt drunk all the time.  Had to change it!  But, it could just be that it affected me strangly.  I don't know about the weight gain symptom.

It's the generic form of Elavil. I used to take it for my fibromyalgia and yes, it made me gain lots of weight. I didn't even take it that long and it seemed like I gained every day. It also made me very tired and weak and foggy. I took it at night to help me sleep but it stayed with me all day. It did help with the sleeping, but I couldn't stand the daytime side effects (especially the weight gain). Kate

I was on flexerill but that did nothing for me.  He thinks this will help me to sleep if taking it at night.

I have a script for amitryptiline for sleep.  I don't use it very often, so I can't comment on the weight gain.  Well, maybe I can - about 2 years ago I took it every night.  I was heavy, but I don't think I gained any weight as a result of the medication. Now I take it occasionally, and haven't gained any weight..  I take a low dose, so I am able to function in the morning after.

Angie- Amitriptyline is the generic for Elavil. It is an anti-depressant. Not for pain. I have taken it for years and notice no difference in anything with or without it. None of the side effects indicate weight gain.Maybe you should ask your doctor his reason for ordering this medication because is you are taking it for back pain it isnt going to help. Its also prescribed for patients who have chronic pain. I was given it for Esophageal spasms and pain
