Hi, I take it at night - 25mg - it helps me sleep and also helps with migraines for me.  I don't really have any daytime problems and I am definately not gaining weight - two years and 4 months after my surgery, I'm still losing a few.  I was taking firocette, and it was causing rebound headaches for me- so I'm feeling much better since the switch.  Good Luck!!! Elavil is a very old antidepressant, and weight gain is very common, I took it for about a month, and gained about 15 lbs. and was always groggy and confused. It probably started as an anit-epilectic drug.  There's a new drug that is being advertised on TV, the first FDA approved drug for fibromyalgia pain. I'd call your Neuro about the cross purposes of this drug, you're trying to lose weight and get pain relief.

Amitriptyline is the generic of Elavil.  Elavil is a tri-cyclic anti-depressant.  It works well for some and zonks others out........the one thing to keep in mind if you have small children/grandchildren in the house is that there is no anti-dote to Elavil if they were to get into it and overdose on it........be careful where you keep it and keep it out of reach of little one's.

You, know the more I think about it, the more strange it is.  It is the lowest dose, but I am on cymbalta for anxiety.   I am really wondering if I should even take it.  It is suppose to be taken at night to help me sleep.  He told me it was a muscle relaxer!? Thanks for all your answers!!

I also took amitripyline for pain and to help me sleep when pain made it hard.  Yes, it IS a tricyclic antidepressant.  BUT, along with some other antidepressants (such as Zoloft), it has been found to be somewhat effective in pain control.  As I recall, the dosage levels are VERY different when used for pain as opposed to when used for depression.  I took 25 to 50 mgs per DAY for pain while many patients who took it for depression may take 200 or more mgs per dose.  I took it EVERY night for about 3 years and never gained a pound, but I took it at bed time and was "normal" again by the time I got out of bed.  Without the med, I was in so much pain and never slept much due to the pain and discomfort.  I'd have felt like doing a lot less without it, so I wouldn't attribute any weight gain to just feeling "out of it" while taking the drug even if I had gained!  Lea

I took it for several years and did not gain weight.  It takes a few weeks to get used to the drug.  The first few doses, really knock you flat and you feel all doped up amd want to sleep.  Take it on a weekend.  My dose started low and gradually increased.  It did help the pain.  The gradual increase was a good way to build up a tolerance to the sleepliness that I felt at first.  I finally could function normally.  I took it at bedtime.  Just do not drink while taking it.

I took it to try to prevent migraines . It stayed in my system too long & I felt like I was half asleep until 10:00 , not good while trying to work . It also kind of made me hallucinate if I woke up during the night . My paintings in my bedroom would come to life . lol . That's the only medicine that has done that to me . It is known to possibly cause weight gain , but I didn't . I took this years ago before even thinking about wls and I didn't notice weight gain.  It is used as an antidepressent and also for your nerves.  I have chronic pain and inflammation that there is no cure for and it was prescribed to sort of deaden the nerves.  It didn't work and I didn't like the way it made me feel.  It affects people so differently that you just have to see if you will gain weight.

I took it for several years, which I refer to as my "lost years" as I was in such a fog, I cannot really remember what happened during that time. Not good! Additionally, I gained at least 100 pounds while taking it. The doctor who put me on it later said it wasn't uncommon for someone taking it to put on 50 to 100 pounds. My personal opinion: hell in a pill. Hope you have better luck with it than I did.
