Movie Theater Popcorn?

Well since I got so badly flamed about my opinion about fast food today, thought I'd ask everyone how they feel about movie theater popcorn (no butter). I go to the movies about twice a year.

LOL I have flame retardant panties... I eat it...with butter. I share a small with my Mom once a month when we go to the movies. I didn't start having it till I was about 4 months out (seeds, pouch healing and all that). I eat 100 cal mini bags Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop at home about once a month too. Is it the best snack choice.... NO Should we focus on protein.... YES but a cheese stick at the movies just isn't quite the same. ~Michelle

I eat the 100 calorie bags a couple of times a week. I even bring one into the theatre with me. I know I shouldn't, but my skinny husband spends enough at the concession stand for a few people, and God forbid the ticket prices. So I don't feel bad for taking care of me. Oh, ETA, if I don't have popcorn at home I will buy a small one at the movies.

Remember always go with what your medical posse has to say. You know all our Dr's have different ideas of what works and what they have had issues with in the past so unfortunately there is no one right answer for all of us. I mean picture this... your Dr. says NO to a certain food. You eat it anyway. You have something get suck or a blockage or whatever... then he has to dig out a clump of whatever the no no food is from your intestines... you are going to have some explaining to do. ~Michelle

If you're going to eat popcorn - bring in your own - it's easy to sneak in a small bag as the stuff in the movie theatre is made with hydrogenated oils - so even if you forgo the fake butter stuff - it's still prepared with something that is known to elevate LDL cholesterol. Airpopped sprinkled with butter buds is a far better choice. I don't do popcorn because it's a high glycemic index food - for a while I took in a small bag of soy crisps - got the crunch and saltiness etc. which I craved and had something to munch on. Now I take in nuts - almonds usually and munch on those - but I didn't tolerate them until at least 6 months out as I recall. Susan

Remember: you can eat anything you want and/or your pouch will tolerate, you simply have to think and plan in advance.  Movie popcorn definitely has more fat in it than what you could make at home, even without the "butter", but having WLS does not mean that you can never again have a cookie or a bag of movie popcorn. Planning may include learning to accurately eyeball a certain volume, such as 3 cups; it may include doing an extra 20 minutes on the treadmill that day, etc. I know theaters don't like you to bring in your own snacks, but I'm simply not going to pay $4 for a small sack of popcorn that isn't as good as I make and of which I can't/won't/don't eat the whole thing (and my hubby doesn't like popcorn).  So I make up some before we go and toss it into a zip lock bag that goes into my purse. That way, I'm in control.  Ann

I love it!  Once or twice a year.  I eat a small bag and it always makes me feel good.  I love to put jalepenos on it.  I get an empty cup at the concession stand and fill it with jalepenos and I can eat about 1/2 of a small bag.  I even go for the butter!  Do I always do this, no.  But once or twice a year a treat won't hurt.  I have a bigger problem with what to drink, because this is the only time I want a coke!  D
