At 5 weeks I would follow what your nut says.

Just because you can does not mean you should.

I have not bought any bread, muffins, crackers, or any refined carbs since I had my revision.  In fact, I haven't bought a loaf of bread in almost two years.

Those calories are, quite frankly, empty.  We need protein, not stuff that turns to sugar almost the minute it hits our digestive systems.

I have to work too hard to get weight off, so breads are pretty much out.  I occasionally treat myself (maybe once a week or less) to bread or a few crackers, but otherwise, I just don't indulge.  Those goods cause a rebound craving effect in many of us, and quite frankly are not that healthy.

Complex carbohydrates are better for you.  Fruits and veggies are much healthier.

I'm with you!!! We ate at the local middle-eastern cafe. I never touched the pita bread. Empty calories. Once you start down that slope, who knows how far one will slide. I just cant do it anymore.

Seriously!

If I start the day with a simple carbohydrate like toast or a muffin, I am RUINED for the day with wild cravings.

It sets us up on that roller-coaster sugar ride.  I just can't do it anymore.  I would rather spend those calories on something my body can use.

My one weakness is cheese.  I don't seem to have any problem with a high-fat food like that, but one piece of bread can derail me (and my weight loss).

I just don't see the value in eating it.  I get my grains in other ways (I do eat rice, but no white rice -- a mixture of red, brown and wild rice).  That's it.  I avoid all wheat and most oat products.  There's just no evidence that we need those things.

Sophie, I have read your posts and you have been thru alot. Sugar and snacks..........this is what nearly killed me. I would eat myself down the highway. I still do home health and because I go to little dinky towns I got bored on those highways. Naturally, I'd eat. Worse thing is to get back on that roller-coaster ride. I just cant do it anymore. J

Ok Im probably gonna get flamed big time but here goes...first of all if the muffin is whole grain I dont see a problem.  Your body DOES need carbs in the form of whole grains and vegtables.  One of the first things I was allowed was pan tostad...which is a very toasted bread they sell in Mexico, where I had my surgery.  The other was soft fruit.  I never had a problem with either.  And I still eat fruit, vegies, and yes...even whole wheat bread...in moderation and Ive lost over 200lbs in 15 months. Second...if your eating just the muffin its not unsual for you to be able to eat half of it.  Try pairing it with an egg or some cream cheese..bet you wont get it all down then.  Dont worry.  At 5 weeks I was terrified I could eat too much and my pouch didnt work.  A few months later...WOW!  The full feeling did kick in and I knew something was differant...and like I said I went on to lose over 200lbs and Im still losing.  I wanna lose about 20lbs more but honestly everybody is telling me to stop...that Im skin and bones..and the skin part I can believe!! No, I'm not going to flame you. But, there are many of us who shouldn't go down that road. I think there are other carbs we can eat that will be just as good and might not start down that path. Congrats on the weight loss. Doesnt it feel good?? J

I'm not flaming, just giving another perspective :)

My surgeons advice is during the weight loss phase of this journey, to strictly limit carbs even whole grain ones. During the maintenence phase she recommends using whole grain carbs on a limited basis. Also, remember that many food items have carbs in them. It might be a bad idea to use the excuse that "we all need carbs" to eat bread and other similair items, if that makes sense. Fruit and veggies also contain carbs and might be a better choice than bread.

In the end, its still our personal choice and thats what it comes down to, right? :) The biggest thing that I carry with me everyday is the reminder that Just Because I Can, Doesnt Mean I Should. For me, bread isnt worth taking up the space and calories that something that is better for me could.

See, no flames! Just another point of view!
