Can you keep acrylic nails on while having your surgery?

I'm getting a set before my surgery and wondered if anyone has been told to remove theirs prior to surgery.

I was told that if we had acrylic nails or poli**** had to be removed prior to surgery.  I don't wear either so I don't know the reasoning for this since it didn't apply but I would save your $$$ and wait until after surgery just in case.

When I had my hysterectomy they told me no acrylics or dark polish. I guess it interferes with the equipment. I'll be asking about this too...a girl needs to know these things, know what I mean? lol

When I had my surgery, they told me no painted nails at all -- so I would assume that acrylics would be out, too.

I'll have a traditional French, but to be safe maybe I should be smart and CALL MY SURGEON.  LOL

Duh!

-Cynthia, thinking this should be addressed in the patient packet

Yeah, do ask.  you may be able to keep them if they're clear.  I think it had to do with seeing if they are turning blue underneath (easy sign that your oxygen has issues)

i think it varies by surgeon and how high tech their equipment is. i think most want to be able to see your nails but I remember a gal from my surgery month said her surgeon had some high tech equipment and she got to keep hers on. better check.  I went for a pedicure and left the fingernails bare.

Cynthia:  I go in 4 days.  My dr says no nail polish, acrylics or toe nail polish.

I remember that I had gotten a pedicure and I took the nail polish (white tips, etc) off because I did not want anything to interfere. I know that the O2 monitor that goes on your finger tip can be affected by nail polish and there is also a chance of it interferring (Heaven forbid) if you were to require a heart defibrilator. I remember that from my ex husband telling me that he has seen that happen (he works in the ER). So, better safe than sorry and wait to treat yourself to a nice relaxing time after your surgery.
