Can you keep acrylic nails on while having your surgery?

I was able to leave my acrylics on but had to have clear polish or a french manicure so that they could see if your nails were turning blue for oxygen reasons :)

I wear light concept gel nails and they were fine for my surgery. Like another poster said as long as they can see your nail bed it should be fine. I say get em done, your breath might stink, you may have greasy hair but at least your nails will look good!

I can't really "take mine off"-- I've had acrylics for 3 straight years. I just took polish remover in case they insisted I take it off. I doubt that I'll remove 'em this time either. I'd think it'd be excrutiating.

I've had acrylic nails continuously since 1984 (my natural nails are thin and weak). The only time I had to take them off was for my wls. I got them put back on a week after sugery. I hated it because when I don't have acrylic on my nails, I bite 'em.

I hope they change their policy regarding them. They aren't any germier than hair, toenails or anything else on your body.

Since my surgery was 5 days before Christmas and I KNEW I would not make it to the salon before the holiday I had a NEW set of acrylics put on the night before surgery "Xmas red polish" on both my nails and toes.

The O2 monitor had NO problem reading my oxygen level.  I've had a TOTAL of 3 surgeries with acrylic nails and polish on.

No one has EVER said to me, "Take it off."

They didn't make me remove my acrylics but I did have to remove my polish. Why not wait and treat yourself to a relaxing day after surgery to have them put on. I think every hosital has different rules on this, maybe call them if you really want them before and see what there policy is. Good luck for an easy surgery and a speedy recovery...

When I had my surgery I had my nails done - as always & we went with the 2 tone acrylic so it looked natural & that was acceptable. That little monitor thingie worked fine on my finger because my girl doesn't do thick disgusting acrylic. I did make sure there was no polish on my toes though & they said that was fine! Every dr/hospital is different... that is one question to ask at your pre-op appt in the hospital!! Cece

Oxygen levels can be monitored by the color of your nail beds( pink good, blue not so good), hospitals also use a devise that clips onto a finger and checks the oxygen level in your blood.
