Popcorn, pickles and Fibromyalgia

HI all,  This is a two-part question but I figured I'd knock it out with one. First, in class they said no popcorn or pickles and I saw 'no pickles' written in one of th educational books. I understand the 'no seeds' thing so is that why 'no pickles'??? What is it with pickles??? And is 'no popcorn' for life??? I'll never be able to go to the movie theater again :-) And I love pickles!!!  Next, I've had Fibromyalgia for 16 years, focused in my hips (from having babies too quickly). I'm usually not in much pain and have managed to work 3 jobs for most the time. But with not being allowed to take my NSAIDS, the pain is getting intense to put it mildly. I know that once I can start swimming again (only 11 days post-op right now) it will get better, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen a remission of the FMS symptoms after having WLS. Mine were in remission when I was pregnant because hormones loosened up the joints - I would love to live pain-free for the rest of my life.  Thanks in advance! Christine

All eating plans are different.  I eat both pickles and popcorn, with the approval of my nut.  I was putting relish in my tuna salad at 6 weeks out.....

I too eat pickles in my tuna salad.  I have Fibro and I have gotten alot better since surgery.  I went to a pain clinic about 6 years ago and the dr there put me on Methadone and I would have died without it.  I have found that I was on 8 pills a day but now I am down to 4.  Most days I am pain free but then yesterday my right leg starting hurting and going numb.  Not sure what the problem is there but I am hoping I just was laying wrong or something. Fibro is a terrible disease.  At least they recognize it now.  I hope you get better.

I agree - Fibro is a terrible disease! When I first got it in 1992, I didn't get properly diagnosed with it until 1994 because no doctor knew what it was and even then most didn't believe it. My Rheumatologist had to show it to me in an obscure medical book! And an internet search only brought up a handful of pages with info on it! Thankfully, it is more recognized now and more women can stop thinking they're just nuts :-)  My legs are always hurting and going numb because my Sciatic nerve runs through my Piriformis muscle in my butt and when that spasms, my legs goes numb. Hope you figure out what yours is from!

I had popcorn after 6 weeks.  But then it was only a handful.

Now that I am 2.5 yrs out, I can consume a "kiddie" sized popcorn at the theater.

Pickles?? never heard of that one.  I would think once you move to cooked or raw veggies, that pickles would be ok.  After all cucumbers ARE the beginnings of pickles.

The fibro question... no answer there.

Hi Christine, I'm sorry I don't have an answer for your Fibromyalgia question but I hope you can go pain-free!!! The popcorn is tricky because it varies as to who you talk to and what nutritionalists have recommended.  Mine, popcorn is okay after 8 weeks and in small amounts.  It's one of those foods that swells after you eat it so be careful.  I grab a piece or two from my kids when I make if for them but it doesn't taste good to me anymore either.  As for the pickles I think it's the seeds for early post-op.  I add relish to tuna (won't eat it without it) and put it on top of my veggie/turkey burgers whenever I eat them.  I've had a few sweet gerkins as well ~ just remember to chew-chew-chew.    I have yet to try a dill pickle but I didn't like them pre-op so I haven't wanted to.

I dont/didn't have fibrom......but I did have several inflammatory things preop - asthma - chronic joint pain etc. - all of which resolved with my weight loss - in addition to loosing plain old body fat - if your belly shrinks - you've reduced the size of your omentum - the visceral belly fat that is actually an endocrine organ and responsible for the secretion of a number of inflammatory proteins that contribute to diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancers and inflammatory conditions like RA, ulcerative colities and the like.   I would think that fibrom......might fall in the same category. Popcorn and pickles - some day to both I would assume - but concentrate on your protein and fluids at this stage.   I had popcorn about a month ago - I'm 15 months out and below goal......I wouldn't have considered touching it before goal - while there is disagreement - I was up three pounds the next day from 2/3rds of a small one - it was of course waterweight - from eating a very salty carb rich food - so I won't indulge again.   I take almonds with me - or soy crisps - both have protein and satisfy the crunch thing.    Susan

Sorry I have nothing to tell you on the fibromyalgia.  But I'm really curious about the eating plan. I had my surgery with the Dr Sonpal who works in the same office. Either I missed it or I'm not following my plan because I have both. The pickles in the beginning had a lot to do with seeds. Popcorn took me awhile to get to digest well - it was kinda scratchy feeling at first. Check with Peter (the nut over there) about this. I've got my 1 year check up in July and now I will have to ask. Since my plan was quite liberal compared to many I've seen on here, I wonder why they would exclude those two. If you find an answer before me be sure to PM me and let me know.

Thanks! Peter the nutritionist talked so damn fast during our lecture I couldn't keep up with half of what he said. That's why I asked about the pickle thing - I wasn't sure what he said!

Hmmm, maybe the sodium and/or sugar in the pickles?  Some eat these things and some don't .  Different docs and nuts have different recommendations.  If you dump on fat, theatre popcorn may be out for you.   For the NSAIDS, it's something to bring up with the doc.  They are a HUGE contributor to ulcers, which is why you can't take them.  Perhaps there is a milder formula that might be effective to you.  It's something for you to bring up with your doctor.
