BMI Calculator and excess skin...

Just saw the BMI Calculator here on OH.  Was just wondering if it would take into account our excess skin?  Even if I went 10 pounds past my and my doctors goal,  I would still be in overweight range.  What gives?  Brian

This is a good question.  I'm down to 127 pounds and people are starting to tell me I'm too skinny.  How much should I deduct from my 127 pounds for the loose skin?   I started out weighing 310 about a little over a year ago.

Given that excess skin varies tremendously from one person to another I don't think the BMi calculator can be calibrated for such a variable. If you know you have 10 pounds of excess skin - decrease your entered weight by ten pounds yourself - don't need the BMI calculator to do that.......many postops at their own or their doctor's goal weight are in the overweight range - if they started with a higher BMI to begin with. Goal weights (at least those choses by an informed bariatric surgeon) are based on statistical likelihood that a patient with a given BMI and health behavior history will reach a given weight. There has been sufficient numbers of patients for such probabilities to be pretty accurate. Doesn't mean you won't loose more (I did) - just means that for a given population of patients with a given BMI - the majority of them will hit a given weight range. Susan
