I am 4.5 months out of a gastric bypass and down alot of weight but now going up.  I lost my insurance shortly after surgery so I have not had my followups & I am wingin it.  I can pretty much eat anything & I am always hungry lately.  I am noticing I can eat quite & bit & so I am back to dieting.  I am feeling very discouraged right now from going through all this & seeing that I may not hit my goal afterall.  I worry I may get heavy again like the other 11 people in my friends & family who have had the surgery.
Anyone else experience this, this early on post surgery?  (being able to eat alot & whatever you want)  I have to say I dont crave sweets & junk & I like more nutrient rich foods now but still takes alot to satisfy me & often.
My sister had hers 30 days after me with a different surgeon & is experiencing very different affects than me.  I am not sure if I did something wrong or what.
Anyone join weigh****chers or anything post surgery to relearn how to eat?  I am considering it.  Any feedback would be appreciated, I'm a lil nervous here.   Thanks.

When you say your sister is having very different effects, do you mean not losing, or is she doing well? If she is losing well, get the information on what her surgeon is having her do.
I have heard of wls patients going to weigh****chers. I get a lot of ideas from reading the boards on what other people are eating. I am so unimaginative, I am hopefully having my vbg revised to rny soon, and will love to eat a large variety of foods again. Almost all dense protein I try doesn't go through my band. We are trying to get all the tests done now before I have surgery.

You may want to try the 5 day pouch test to get re-started. I have seen it posted on here a lot.

Good luck!

My sister is wingin it also due to no insurance.  Hey how do you get your lil ticker to show as a pic?  Thanks for your reply.

Go to tickerfactory.com and actually right-click on the picture of the ticker, not the code.
Copy and then paste it where you want it.

To get it in your signature block, Go to the user settings link up to your left.
You can paste it there under your name.

I may not have explained it well, look on the main board though, a lot of people ask the same question.

Everyone here is always so helpful, so I am sure someone will give you ideas. I see a lot of eat protein first, lots of water, and take your vitamins.

Is there any chance you qualify for a medical card to cover doctor visits? I know a couple of people who it paid for their wls surgery.

Good luck.

Sorry about you losing your insurance.  The one thing that would be worth your $$ is your having your bloodwork done at least at 6 month intervals so you can be sure your body is getting what nutrients it needs.  There are times you can go to clinics and get it done cheaper.  I recommend you shop around.
I am currently 8 months out.  I, too, am surprised at how much I can eat.  I try to fill up on proteins 1st and avoid carbs as much as possible  They are useless to us at this point.  I crave sweets each month the week before my period-not fun!!  I am trying to find healthier alternatives to guzzling chocolate by the gallon like I want to! LOL
Be careful no to compare yourself to someone else-your sis or your family.  EVERYONE seems to have a different reaction to RNY.  Some have no appetite, some have cravings, some have transfer addictions, some regain weight, some have none of these issues...you get the idea.  Remember that this is just a TOOL.  You must use your tool (follow the rules:  take your vitamins, eat proteins 1st, avoid carbs, exercise daily, drink water, etc) or your tool will do you NO GOOD!
I have read that several people have joined WW or other group for support.  It is a great way to focus on weight loss and healthy eating.  The weekly support is so powerful!!  I would not be surprised to find myself joining WW to get off the last few pounds-it is already harder to lose the weight and I am only 8 months out.
Good luck.

Thank you MTT.  Did your weight loss go up and down as early as 4-5 months out?  Did you plateau for a month or so?  I lost so fast at first it was scary now it has stopped for a month & now I am going up.  Never heard of it happening so soon.  I hate the thought of going back to dieting that didnt work in the 1st place.  :(

Yes, I had a major stall (about 2 months of losing only 3 or 4 pounds a month-a major change from the 8-10# per month) at 100#.  BUT, I lost major INCHES!!  It was like my body needed to adjust to my weight loss.  I would lose a pound or 2 then play with those pounds for a a couple of weeks (go up then down, go up then down) then suddenly lose another pound or 2.  I am still not losing like I was at the beginning, but I am happy that I am still losing.  I have lost 128 and have another 72# to go... =)
Stop worrying that you will fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you think negative, your experience will BE negative!!

You are expressing some ideas that are troublesome to me - and not at all unusual - that somehow this surgery is a magic bullet - that being hungry means you have to feed it - that you can eat quite a bit and do - that the idea of 'dieting' seems to be s surprise to you.    It's important to keep in mind that permanent dietary changes are required for life - not just for a while - in order to not regain.  Not having insurance is terrible - but having it wouldn't make this situation any different (other than getting you to do bloodwork - which at 6 months out you have to do even if you pay out of pocket - it's essential to have done) if the issue is you're not eating optimally (protien first - no refined carbs - limited complex carbs during the active weight loss phase)   Are you exercising - you have to - depending only on the surgery is shortsighted - and long term success at both achieving maximum weight loss - and more importantly maintaining it depends on making exercise a daily part of life.  That seems to surprise a lot of postops - if yo'ure gaining at 4/5 months out -you have got to get a handle on this - because at 18 months out and 4 years out - the malabsorption element of our surgery has been pretty much reversed by our bodies - the body grows more absorptive capacity in our remaining small intestine  - so we're left only with restriction by the pouch.    Lots of people succeed with WLS - and as you've witnessed - lots of people fail.    The difference seems to be that those that succeed change their eating for life - and make exercise a daily event for life.  If you do what you used to do - even in smaller quantities - but make poor food choices - success is elusive.    Go back to the nut - or find one that treats bariatric patients - and have him/her review detailed food diaries - post a days typical intake on here - every week if you have to - so people with more experince can give you feedback.  Learn about low glycemic index foods - they are key - get your butt moving.    This is my mantra lately (I've had a very difficult year for reasons not at all related to my surgery) - fold or fight.  If you want a different outcome - you better fight.     Susan

I have found since I am recording all the foods I eat daily on the website  thedailyplate.com   I am doing a much better job of holding myself accountable.  I am focusing on getting more protein in.  When I see that I am not getting in enough protein, I then look at what I ate and where I slipped.  I search for foods that give me the most protein bang for my buck.

It's normal to stall after a few months of loss and I have always lost 2-3lbs just to gain it back and then lose it again and then lose some more and then gain a little ..but the important thing is that i lose more often then i gain .. I think the fluctuations in weight are normal .. they can be due to extra salt in your diet or the time of the month ... if you ate right and moved to lose then it's usually water weight not real weight gain.

However, like someone eles posted before it would be a good idea for you to get some control over your daily intake instead of just eating when you are hungry, that is called grazing and can lead to consumeing extra calories that will prevent you from loseing and WILL make you gain the weight you have lost in the long run.

I like useing thedailyplate.com Goodluck!
