Should I drink decaffeinated coffee?

Good morning everyone,
I am 4 months out RNY.  Before surgery I would drink a pot of decaffeinated coffee daily with fat free hazelnut creamer in it. I stopped that because of surgery.

I was wondering besides the obvious calories in the creamer, is there anything else the DECAFFEINATED coffee could do to me postop? I was thinking of just using silk milk as my creamer. I am having a cup right now with chocolate silk. Pretty good, but as good as my old way.

Will decaffeinated coffee also cause dehydration?

Thanks bunches.
Lynn

I drink decaf sweetened with Splenda all the time, and haven't had any problems.  We were told we could drink decaf - I think it's the caffeine that dehydrates, so if it's decaf you should be ok.  As for the creamer,  I think you're far enough out from your surgery that you'd be ok, as long as it's fat free/sugar free.

I drank decaf coffee up until 4-5 months after surgery. Since then I used standard coffee. But, I do like to drin****d tea--and tea also has caffeine.  I do drink decaf instant iced tea.  High levels of caffeine to the recent post ops can cause irritaion at surgical areas, causing ulcers. This is why surgeons suggest you stay away from regular coffee after surgery. Some surgeons don't like their patients to ever use caffeine, but my support group leader and many there do drink regular coffee--but only a 1-2 cups daily, not a whole pot full. Standard coffee has around 60mg of caffeine, and "high test" coffees tend to have closer to 100mg of caffeine per cup. DAVE

Well, foot, Dave...I'll get back on the caffeine - not much, mind you, but I did love that kick in the morning.  Lynn, stick to the decaf for awhile longer - you have to be mighty careful because you're still so close to your surgery.

i don't i think it is up to you really... decaffeinated does have some caffeine but not that much..  i didn't do any caffeine until about a month ago.  i just say it helps..  i have notice alot of the starbuck doubleshots have a great source of protein but i think drinking caffeine drinks is really up to the person and how they take them.  i see alot of ppl drinking them on here.  i for one is one of those ppl.  but i don't drink a ton like i did before surgery... i lived off of red bull with a double shot espresso and diet dr pepper all day long.

do you guys count this as fluid intake if it is decaffeinated?

I quit drinking caffeinated a year before surgery because my doctor suggested I do that. My heart was beating to a different drummer from all the caffeine.
