Is black stool common after gastric bypass? Very early out.

No...Bright red blood is usually a sign of hemorrhoids....
Black, tarry stools is a sign of a GI (gastro-intestinal) bleed and should be taken seriously. While a small amount may be typical after WLS, it definately is not normal for it to continue and can be a warning sign of a very serious problem. This is something that should be discussed with a doctor. Don't risk you life at the hands of those on a message board giving you a bag of mixed advice. ONLY YOUR DOCTOR can provide you with accurate information in relationship to your health.

yup it is old blood from the surgery.  you will get some stains on  your undies even if you don't have a bowel moment.  it is gross and can smell a little..

Thanks everyone for your concern.  I called my Mom and she did confirm that my Dr. said the first bit would possibly have some old blood in it..possibly be tarry and black..I  feel fine and the bit (tmi I know) I passed today was still dark but much lighter.

Thanks again!

I had my surgery in April of this year. But I remeber the black , very dark movement . It smelled bad. It stay with me for a long time. The good news the plants in my bathroom loved the smell. I even placed the plants from the other rooms into the bathroom on the floor, inside the bathtub. I used the other bathroom for showering. The plants grew so pretty.  Ahter a while this all goes away and is only a memeory.
