Hello all,

Just wondering if I can take Mucinex DM for cough suppresant. I don't know if it's bad for my pouch. Had gastric surgery 10 months ago.

Thank you

Mucinex is a timed-release formulation of guaifenefin (an expectorant) and an immediate-release formulation of dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant.  It's overpriced by a factor of 5 or 10 than the immediate-release cough syrup, Robitussin DM, and the fact that it's a timed-release medication makes it less effective in post-op RNYers.

Why not just buy some Robitussin DM cough syrup for less money?  Better yet, buy the drug-store-brand generic version of Robitussin DM for even less money.

High doses of guaifenesin might cause some GI irritation, but I doubt the typical teaspoonful or two will cause any problems.  Guaifenesin and dextromethorphan are common components of most cough and cold medications.  Nether is a NSAID, so neither needs be avoided by post-op RNYers.
