flintstone vitamins
I took flintstone vitamins the first 6 months and I took 1 twice a day. And I just had my lab work done and everything was great. But I also took a B12 2500mcg sublingual, and chewed 2 vita chews with calicum/D and K added. All my levels were perfect. But I have changed to the Centrum chewables and still do B12 and the chews for calicum and D, K. The bariatric vitamins were 4 a day. but nothing else needed to be added. Cost wise it's 30 bucks a month to 15 a month vit =6, b12= 5, chews= 4. I have heard everyone's comments on the flintstone vitamins but the other use to upset my pouch, but now I can handle them. so I think the flintstones are fine until you can tolerate the others. Just My Opinion.
My doctor told me they were fine to take. The Bariatric Advantage and the Centrum chewables made my stomache queezy but the Flintstones are fine if I chew them quickly. I was told to take 2 like the bottle says by my surgeon. If you look at the backs of them and other vitamins and compare the ingredients/vitamin counts - they are essentially the same. My doctor told me there was nothing wrong with taking them. In the store you can compare them to others, like Centrum, and online you can find the ingredients to Bariatric Advantage so you can compare it to that as well.
Hope this helps.

I still take them. 1 in the morning and 1 at night. My labs are always good (somethings are a low normal, but that is to be expected after this surgery. Still witnin normal limits though). I sometimes take the CVS Adult chewables but I tend to gag (graffic...sorry) on those. But if they are on sale, I will try to get them down.

flitnstones vitamins are NOT adequate! I don't care what certain dr's say, any credible dr will tell you that you NEEEDDD to take a bariatric Vitamin. 2 CHILDRENS vitamins cannot possibly be enought for us. They are childrens vitamins, not vitamins for adults who had their intestants rerouted. Plus 2 cannot possibly be enough (in the long run) because I take bariatric vitamins and I take 4 a day. So I do not know why any surgeon, dr, nut would tell anyone to take flintstones vitamins, they are not for us, we need something more!

Changed for good

I take 2 a day of the Flinstones vitamins and my bloodwork has been perfect. Im 15 months out and have not had any problems so far with my labs. To each his own something may work for some and not for others and there is nothing we can do about that. Personally the Bariatric(sp) vitamins made me sick and I have two full bottles of them here and have no one to give them to. Not to mention those vitamins are so much more expenensive then the Flinstones. I personally take the generic brand that I buy from Costco's.
Im a little blown away that you would say "ANY CREDIBLE DOCTOR". Im sure that almost everyone going to have this surgery has investigated their surgeon. As I work in a clinic and went to the Medical Director and he told me the website to go to to choose a "Credible WLS" and I feel my doctor is credible and 95% of his patient have had great results.
Please be mindful of how you choose your words on this website as many people rely on this information to help make decisions. Who better to ask then a person who has been through it right????
In closing when you choose a vitamin go with what your surgeon suggest and you should be fine. They have studied the effects this surgery has on their patients and they continue education on a constant basis.

She's right.
Anyone who has actually, you know, compared the vitamins to adult counterparts or to certain bariatric supplements would see that they are not the same quality.
My husband can't take pills. He has normal guts. And he still thinks it's stupid as hell for anyone over the age of 10 to take children's vitamins. There is a reason they are in the shape of cartoon characters.
Additionally, docs that continue to recommend these are generally guilty of recommending TUMS to their patients... another completely reprehensible and careless action.
Docs *****commend vitamins that will force their patients to be malnourished should be disbarred. Period.

I know many people who take the vitamins are not malnurished. Many of them are 5+ years out. So I don't hold water into that theory. What do you feel is the reason they are in shape of cartoon characters?
If a child is sick they take penicllin right? Just at a smaller dose then what adults would take but nevertheless it is still pencillin
We all have our opinions however, I work in a Healthcare setting and discuss things with Physicans all the time.

Hey. Let it happen to you. And then you'll get on the bandwagon.
I took Flintstones and Tums for 2 years per surgeon recommendation. My surgeon walked on water, he's God's gift to the scapel, and he knew *EVERYTHING*.
Wrong. He's a great guy, and a gifted surgeon.. but he knows squat about nutrition.
You work with physicians? Ask them when they had their last nutrition course.. most (if not all) will say "I've read some articles, but my last course was my 3rd year in med school......"
Period.
So what did flintstones and tums for two years get me?
A ferritin level in the toilet. Should be around 200? Mine's 11. I take 300mg of elemental iron a day, and I haven't made progress on this number in 2 years.
Osteomalacia due to a calcium issue and lack of vitamin D. What is osteomalacia, you ask? It's rickets. My bones were so soft they were bending due to minor things like walking, picking up my children, taking a shower.. you know, things that don't need to be done on a regular basis. Oh, and the pain? In my toes? My arms? My hips? The pain that made it hard to get out of bed everyday? Just a silight, minor inconvience. Nothing important.
B-12 on the way low end of normal. My OB threatened shots if it didn't go up. That level was below 200. How I got out of shots in retrospect, I have no freakin clue. Know what B-vite deficiencies cause? Well, minor things like psychotic delusions, permanent neural impairment, coma, and death.. again, nothing to be concerned about.
So yeah, go right ahead and follow a children's supplementation schedule. And in a few years when you've gone down the same freaking road several of us have (including Melting Mama), you'll be on the "DON'T TAKE FLINTSTONES" bandwagon.
Good luck with that.
