Hey everybody.  I'm trying to figure out what the difference between acute care and hospice is?  Thanks.

Yep.  Transfering her to acute care but not hospice.  WTH?  Whats the friggin' difference.  All I know is that they kept telling her she was going home over and over again so she was excited.  Now they're sayin' nope, acute care.  She takes too much time from the nurses (which I can understand).  Why can't she just get a nurse to stay all the time at home with her?  How does that work with insurance??!!

This would be for someone who isn't going to recover also, which is why I don't understand.  Thanks for your input though.

Oh oh oh, wait a second... isn't hospice specifically for pain and comfort control?  Acute care would most likely include measures to prolong life.  I would imagine things like antibiotics and that kind of thing where hospice might only be pain medicine and food and fluids.

I could be way off, this is just my best guess.

You could be right.  She has a NG tube that sucks all the icky juices out of her belly and a catheter and antibiotics and pallative (sp) chemo, plus receives transfusions and potassium and has tons of nausea control.  So it isn't just a control the pain sort of thing.  Makes sense, thanks.

Hello!
Haven't chatted with you in a while....
but, just went through this with my Grandpa....
Sorry, I know there is a difference in age....but....the difference here in Minnesota was that the Acute care could offer more personal service and more individualized to what the needs were.
Which was REALLY nice.  It became more specialized.  As far as for insurance issues, they all completely differ between companies, so you will want to make a call to the specific company she has and ask questions.  But first....I will advise you to talk to the current nursing staff and tell them you want to talk to a social worker to help you with making the transitions.  They are VERY well versed in what is available and know most of the insurance companies in the area.

I hope this helps, and hugs for all the family, you and your sister!
