I did not have a bowel movement for a little over a week after surgery, I am now 7 weeks post op and still only have a bowel movement once  a week, I spoke with my dr's office Thursday and they said that it was relatively common before you are able to eat a lot of fiber, He did not seem too concerned with it. He did tell me that I can start taking metamucil now.
For you I would just recommend making sure that you are getting in enough fluids and everything should move along, remember sip, sip, sip.
Good luck
Yvonne

After surgery they made me take milk of magnesia to make sure my bowels were moving. I am over 4 months out now and I still have trouble this week I realized that it had been over a week since I had went so I had to take milk of magnesia for two days and then I finally went. Its a problem for me and many others many people say fiber but I get plenty of that and still have trouble.

I had my surgery on the 17th. I didn't have a bowel movement til 6 days later. My doctor told me not to worry about it because I'm on a liquid diet still. I'm still not regular yet and I'm almost two weeks out. If you don't have a movement by your 7th day, you should call your doctor.

I had the same concern as you, but was reminded that the pre-op bowel prep had completely emptied me out and since surgery I was only on liquids.  With no leftover waste and no solid food coming in, the body doesn't make much in that first week.  Once I was on full liquids for a couple of days I was back in the bathroom, although the quantity stayed small until I was eating regular foods again.  I'm 2 months out now and find that I don't go every day.  If 3 days pass, I take a dose of Metamucil and always go the next day.

Betcha never dreamed that pooping would become such a focus.  Remember the character Fish in that old police series on TV?

Hi!  I was going thru this just to see if anyone else had these same problems.  (I thought it was just me).  I had RNY on 8/18/08.  I have been having horrible problems with this.  It built up and then it almost took an act of God to come out.  I have hemorrhoids on top of it all.  Prior to surgery I took Glucophage and that pretty much regulated me.  Since my surgery my Diabetes has gone away and my sugars are normal.  No need for anymore medicine.  Thank God.  Getting back to "the problem"  I have been taking stool softners and they seem to help alittle bit, but I wonder how long you can do that?  Anyway, I agree with your statement, betcha never dreamed that pooping would become such a focus...No I never did.....

I'm coming to the conclusion that the constipation is a direct result of the total lack of fats in our diets.  When I use a nice balsalmic vinaigrette salad dressing, with good Extra Virgin Olive Oil, my movements are soft and regular.  I now try to keep about 3 tablespoons in my daily intake.

When you get to salads, you'll be OK, but in the meantime a stool softener and lots of fiber is probably a good idea.  Maybe a suppository to make things move easier???

Good luck!
