? about carnation instant breakfast
Hello everyone! Hope everyone is doing well today. I just wanted some feedback regarding the pre-op liquid diet. I do not have a date for my surgery yet, but it is going to be in January. I am having a difficult time losing 10-15 that the sugeon asked me too on a positive side I have lost 4 so far and have 2 months left to do so. The dietician gave me a pre-op diet in case I have a hard time that can be done 2-3 wks prior to surgery. So the thing is it suggested the sugar free carnation instant breakfast. My mom has access for no charge to the carnation instant breakfast that is not sugar free. Now I do realize that I cannot have this after the surgery. The dietician said it is ok for me to have this for the pre-op diet only difference between them is that it is around 60 calories more than the sugar free one. I am not too sure if it is a good idea to go ahead with the ones that are not sugar free.... would anyone else go ahead with the free drinks? I just do not want to sabotage any weight loss.
Carnation instant breakfast is EXPENSIVE!! So if you have access to the regular for free, I say drink that while you can. If the only difference is 60 calories and you aren't diabetic then it really isn't an issue. My nut had me on 3 CIB shakes and 2 healthy choice meals/day for the 3 weeks before surgery and it wasn't sf CIB. I lost 14 lbs in 3 weeks. So it must have been ok!! Of course, as you know, after surgery it will be a no no. In fact the first thing I dumped on post op was SUGAR FREE CIB!! Thought I would warn you!! Good luck and I think you will do great.
Just so you know, the Carnation Instant Breakfast isn't sugar free it's "no sugar added". That's not the same a sugar free. You probably will be fine with the regular one prior to surgery as your dietician is right there isn't much different calorie or sugar wise. After surgery, if you decide to purchase the no sugar added kind, go to Walmart if you have one near you...it's a lot cheaper there. Good luck!
As another poster stated, the carnation isn't sugar free, it's no sugar added. Keep this in mind if you decide to drink it post op. I dumped on it the first week post op and refuse to try it again even though I still have a whole box. My nut. recommended slim fast low carb drinks. I think they have 190 calories but they have a lot of protein, too ( I can't remember how much right off hand). Either no sugar or only very few grams. I drank a few pre-op but I lived off those for the first few weeks post-op and had no problems. My pre-op diet consisted of 1000 calories a day with mostly protein, 5 servings of veggies, 1 fruit and 1 serving of bread. It was hard the first 3 days. I felt I was starving, but I lost 10 pounds in three weeks doing that. I ate mostly tuna so after surgery I didn't even want to look at it. Now, 5 months post-op I'm just able to eat tuna again. Good Luck
