Can We Not Eat Rice (After RNY)???

1/2 cup of enriched white rice has 113 calories, 25 grams of carbs and only 2 grams of protein. So you get very little protein but lots of carbs and calories for a small amount. I dont eat rice anyways because I only like it with gobs of melted butter and that would not be a good idea. I do however eat Kozy Shack sugar free rice pudding.

I went from lap band to RNY on Aug 1 2008.

I can handle some pasta but very little rice.  Frankly, rice just isn't worth the effort when it come to my tummy.

I am a rice eater.  But, it's sort of a treat.

Although - if we ate more whole grain rice in our post-op community, maybe we'd see less of a problem of thiamin deficiency?  http://www.ucpress.edu/image/covers/isbn13/9780520220539.jpg

I have had both rice and pasta after my RNY. Let me clarify though, the rice I had was with sushi and we are talking a small amount of rice. My Dr. said to eat brown rice if I was going to eat it. I've only had it a handful of times, never as the main part of the dish. As for pasta, I do eat it, but I've found a low-carb pasta that sits very well without causing me to dump. I think it would be wise to eat small amounts of rice and low-carb pasta if you can. Everyone is different though, what someone can handle might differ from you!

I have only had very tiny amounts of rice post-op and did not feel well after. My nut recommends brown rice over white rice also. I really don't miss rice much though. I can do small amounts of pasta if it's something like the Dreamfields or Barilla Plus. I have only tried it twice. I don't do it often, but when my family really wants some pasta I will make that kind and they don't know the difference.

I had problems with wild rice that it just would not seem to go down.  I had the too full feeling for a few days.  I have had white rice with almost no problems, although it fills you up fast with little nutritional value.  I can and do eat rice in small amounts now, although for the first few months after surgery, I would not recommend it.

Rice won't swell in your pouch if it is properly cooked to begin with...  I usually only eat rice at home as that is the only time I can be sure it was cooked thoroughly.  I know that the steamed stuff at the Chinese restaurant always swells on me and makes me sick, but it is usually a bit dry from being out for so long.  I just learned that lesson the hard way!

My surgeon wants us to eat as little "white stuff" as possible (white flour, crackers, popcorn, pasta, bread, rice, etc) as he feels that many of us were carboholis to begin with and limiting carb (refined carbs) intake is a good plan for most of us.  Not all of us follow his plans to that limit though.  He says if you must eat rice that Basmati rice is the best option and that works for me as it was the only rice I was buying before my surgery.  It tastes good and has decent nutritional stats as well.  BUT, I only eat a tablespoon or two of it as it still fills me up quickly and I need to get my protein in too!

Some folks may not tolerate rice.  Some postops just choose to avoid it as they are very strictly low-carbing it...  It is up to you!  But, I'd wait at least 6 months postop before I tried it...

The first time I dumped was on white rice.  I do ok with brown rice, but anymore than a bite or two of white rice and I'm feeling crappy.
