Anyone use AZO tablets post op?
Yesterday morning I had the beginnings of what I believed to be a bladder or urinary tract infection. I keep AZO tablets in the medicine chest (being a diabetic I would never drink cranberry juice due to the sugars). I called the local pharmacy and they had no further info on this OTC product that indicated that a post bariatric (RNY) should not take it.
I took the 2 tablets with some water - about 15 minutes later I my hands were on fire and then became bright red. Within another 15 minutes, my entire body was bright red, burning and itching and within a few more minutes, raised welt marks began to appear on my chest and other tender skin areas. All of this became further complicated with vomiting and dry heave wretching.
We went to the local urgent care center and I was given an IV os salumedrol with prednisone - and with an hour I felt perfectly fine - a bit tired (probably dehydration) but otherwise fine....well, except I had a 245 blood sugar level (which auto corrected by this morning - without any insulin - woohoo!).
The doctor believes that the absorption of this medication may have been the issue becuase the dye itself may have entered my blood stream becuase it did not pass through the typical route (I am alleric to medical contrast dyes and AZO turns urine a bright orange as it works).
So - my question is; has anyone else taken AZO for UTI irritation post-wls surgery and if so, did you have any reactions to this?

I have taken them with no problems as I do get frequent bladder problems. I take cranberry comfort tablets daily and this has helped me from getting infections as often and that way I do not have to drink the juice. Ocean Spray also has a sugar free juice made with Splenda. Hope you feel better.

thank you for all the replies; as it turns out by your responses, this may be something that is specific to me. After the reaction I had, I will definitely avoid AZO tablets in the future. Thanks again; your information was quite helpful.
By the way, I am doing much better today - some stomach acid issues from the antibiotic, but other than that, am feeling a-ok.
