Has anyone ever had a fever of 99.7 after surgery?  I feel fine, but did have diarrhea tonight.

I differ - I would call your doc's on call person and go to the ER.  You can't take a chance on an infection.

Is 99.7 a fever?  I thought it was over 100.something.  I think you would be fine if it does not get any higher than 99.8.

Why do some people experience diarrhea after this surgery?

Diarrhea can occur immediately after surgery but usually subsides in the first week.  Any time the bowel is touched, third spacing can occur.  Third spacing means tha****er will fill the bowel space, and may pass as loose stool.  Sometimes, this extra water may be reabsorbed without causing diarrhea.  Chronic diarrhea that does not get better is not a common side effect of this procedure.  Examine what you are eating (see dumping, as listed above.)  Fruit juices, potatoes, high sugar and high starch foods will provoke diarrhea.  Read your labels!  If the diarrhea persists, and you have eliminated any offending foods, call your surgeon.

I would ease your mind and put in a call to the doctor.  I am sure you are ok but he is the one you need to talk too.

As a pharmacist, I can tell you that a fever is defined as 101 or greater or 2 degrees greater than your baseline.  For someone like me who runs closer to 98.0 and not 98.6, I would be more worried if my temp was 99.7, just because that is so close to 2 degrees over my baseline.  Also, know that you may experience an increase in temp after any surgery.  It is just a normal reaction of your body.  However, I agree go ahead and call your doctor.  They probably would want to be made aware of anything different from your baseline.  Take care.

<-------Pharmacist  I can answer general questions, but for more serious questions always ask your surgeon.

Hi! I had my surgery the same day as you and I ran a temp of 99.8 in the hospitol for awhile and they told me it was nothing to be alarmed about. I have also had a slight fever a couple of times since being home but nothing over 100. My surgeon said to call if it goes over 101.
