No Protein Shakes
I don't have any issues with gout but I was instructed by my surgeon NOT to take protein shakes at all. I actually started drinking them, simply because ever since I had researched WLS, all I read was how important protein shakes are. But when I saw my surgeon and told him I was drinking them, he said "go ahead if you want to slow down your weight loss". He says that when the body is faced with extreme calorie restriction, ingested protein is converted to calories rather than used to preserve muscle. I've really struggled with this and everyone says "don't listen to him, take the shakes" but so far I've followed all of his rules and I don't think he's steer me in the wrong direction. I've lost 58 lbs in two months, so he can't be all wrong. I know it's hard to get that much protein in through food alone but all we can do is try. Make sure the protein goes in first! ;D
I never used protein shakes (although I think that RNY patients need more than banded people do). I used high protein beans and chick peas, fish, especially tuna, f/f milk, cheeses.
Invest in a good blender and make whatever you fancy for any puree stage, adn then just choose and plan your days meals and you will get enough protein.
