Colonoscopy prep-post RNY

Sorry if this has been asked recently or is TMI...
I am in the middle of my bowel prep for a colonoscopy tomorrow.  I TOLD the doctor's office I had RNY surgery, and that I needed a prep that I could tolerate.  They prescribed Half-Lytely.  I am supposed to drink this jug of nasty stuff at a rate of 8 oz every 10 minutes, and I'm having a very hard time following this rule.

It says I have to fini**** all, so do I endure the pain/fullness and chug it down, or will I be ok if I spread it out a little more than what they say?

Also, if you have had to go through this, what type of prep did your doc order for you.  I'm seriously doubting that this one could be the best they have to offer for RNY patients.

Any advice, help, or sympathy would be appreciated!

Hi, I haven't had the surgery yet, but I would call your surgeon's office and ask them.  Seems like an awful lot to drink after RNY.  Good luck.

I had to take the regular stuff (don't remember the name but there was nothing lightly about it) I have also been hospitalized 2x and had to drink that stuff...my advise get it freezing cold and then just chug it down as much as you can, once it's down I drank some water I flavored it with lemon & lime peels. (just drop them in the water they add flavor without adding juice to the water.
Good luck it's not pleasant but you have to do it....Laurie

I did this just 2 weeks ago and had to drink 8 oz in 15 min,if you cant do it ; dont worry,,I took about 1 hour past the time it was suppose to be done and I still got my colonoscopy done,, you have to be cleaned out fully or they wont do the surgery..,when you let it out in the toliet the fullness feeling goes away.....Have to admit the further out you are from Wls the easier it is...you should be ok even if it takes you longer to drink it..I am happy to say i am colon cancer free,, I go back in 10 years...good luck,,it was easier to drink for me at room temp.

I don't remember what I had to drink, I just remember it was AWFUL! I had to do everything in my power to keep it from coming back up. I did not tell my doctor that I was RNY so I believe I probably had to drink what everyone else had to.

The worst part of the whole thing is the prep work. You'll breeze through the procedure and sleep like a baby afterwards.

Good Luck!

Yes, sympathy and empathy coming your way. Doc's who don't really understand the challenges of "excessive liquid intake in a short period of time" for WLS post-ops seem to entirely gloss over this little problem. The crap I was assigned to drink was, to top it off, so salty tasting. I don't like salty things. I rarely even salt meat, for Pete's sake!  I went back to the pharmacy after trying that junk and got some magnesium citrate. Just 4 little ounces cleaned me out.

I'm not recommending that anyone self-prescribe, but that was a lot easier to tolerate and get down and did the job.

So, the morning of my first colonoscopy I had quite a chat with the doc doing the procedure about his need to be far more understanding and helpful with RNY patients in meeting their particular needs. He admitted that while he knew he'd had RNY patients before, and that they complained, no one had really explained to him why they were complaining.  Next time I had one, mag cit was right on the orders.

I had to do the prep for my colonoscopy (years post gastric bypass).   I did everything.... And nothing happened!   The next day when I had it done I was fully awake and aware (drugs didn't knock me out at all)....I watched the screen and could even see that I wasn't cleaned out.  The Dr was upset with me and accused me of not doing th prep correctly..but I honestly did!

I'm seeing on his forum that others have had the same issue...I feel like calling him now!

I honestly don't get why RNY would make it difficult to drink as required (there's a hole at the top and bottom of your pouch that the liquid goes through kiss  like a funnel ...) but I don't see a problem if it takes you an hour or whatever more than expected - it's more important that you fini**** rather than the amount of time it takes!

I had a colonoscopy about 5 years post RNY and used Moviprep - was as clean as a whistle and actually found it really easy ...
