Regarding the sugar free candies:

Be careful what you recommend!  All that did for me was send me to the ER with the worse gas pains I'd ever had in my life!

MY ADVICE!  NEVER INJEST SUGAR ALCOHOLS.  (based on my personal experience, that is:)

Hadn't heard about the gas thing, but some RNYers do dump on sugar alcohols ..  So, obviously don't go that route if you're one of those that do ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

I had this problem pre-op after I started the liquid diet.  I think the lack of food shocked my intestines and they very nearly shut down in revolt.  LOL.  I drank and continue to drink plenty of fluids each day, exercise and still the ole bowels do not respond but once every 3-4 days which is not my "normal".  Try the Miralax.  It is tasteless.  I put it in my crystal lite drink and it dissolves completely.  It took 2 days the first time but it did get things moving for me; no cramping or anything like that.  What a relief.

Sorry to say, but you got some bad advice here. Stimulant laxatives are BAD for EVERYONE. I am not a doctor, but I am a nurse, and I work in endoscopy (I do colonoscopies and egds with gastroenterologists) so I have seen the effects of stimulant laxatives, and have visited with the GI docs about them! Stimulant laxatives damage the nerves in the colon which will eventually make you dependant on them. It also stains the colon; a condition called melenosis coli. Senna, Cascara, aloe, other "herbal" stimulants are NOT a good idea, period. What IS safe, and not addictive forming is milk of magnesia, miralax, or docusate sodium. Also adding a fiber supplement drinking plenty of water and exercising is a good idea. Good luck!

How do you feel about the Magnesium Oxide?

Not exactly sure about the magnesium oxide, I would stick with milk of magnesia (generic brand is fine) and if you don't like the liquid, get the capsules, but just read the box carefully that it doesn't contain stimulants. Milk of magnesia is completely safe, non addictive, and you can't over dose on it (you just get diarrhea if you take too much.)

I agree with the fellow nurse who posted. I am an ICU nurse and was advised by my bariatric surgeon and internal medicine physicians NOT to use Dulcolax (I did have to use it for pre-op prep). It caused me such horrible stomach pains. I have had a few episodes of constipation and have tried glycerine suppositories, saline enemas and miralax. The enema worked but now I use miralax every 2-3 days and I have a result within 6-8 hours.

I do not use high fiber products because I felt very bloated and it did not help me.
