If a person needs an IV bolus of fluids for dehydration, where can they get one besides an ER?

I think the ER is the only option.

Your doctor's office might be able to do it, but they probably won't have the supplies.  You'll probably have to go to the ER.  An urgent care center might suffice.

You can try the fire department. They always have IV available on the ambulence.

They aren't going to hydrate someone without transport to the hospital.  They aren't in the business of treating in that manner.  They only preserve life until they are at a hospital.

Some urgent care facilities are equipped to provide hydration.

I'm pretty sure you can't just walk into the fire department and ask them to hook you up to an IV.  If you call an ambulance and want them to treat you and transport you to the ER, they'll hook you up.

I am a Respiratory Therapist and work in a hospital, and can tell you that no one will give you an IV and a bolus of fluid without a doctors order.  You would need to be examined and they would need to make sure that is what you even need, because sometimes extra fluid can be detrimental to your health, especially where the heart is concerned.  Most of the clinics that I know of are not equipped for something like that, and would refer you to the ER or as an outpatient somewhere for something like that.  Fire departments and Ambulance crews should not be hooking you up to fluids unless you are being transported to an ER, and then they will only do it in certain cases.  That is the professional side of me talking, now personal side of me talking would be to go and get some gatorade or powerade because it is full of electrolytes and will help rehydrate you.  Frustrating, I know - but as I am sure everyone has told you - drink, drink drink!!  Getting dehydrated can cause a lot of medical problems for you, so it is so very important to get your fluids in!  Good luck, and let us know how you are doing!!

I just read your reply and it makes sense. Makes me crazy that transfusions, rbc, platelets, plasma can be done as an outpatient basis but I understand the over infusion of fluids can be dangerous as well, even more so depending on the rate. Mom.transfision, then lasix I was crazed.

you mentioned gatorage...... Hydralyte is the best I have found for my mom who is constantly fighting dehydration and had gone as far as dehydration delirium several times but this has helped immensely, so thank you. And you can purchase directly from the company.
