How Do I Quit Smoking??
Does anyone have any advice on how to quit smoking? I've been smoking since I was 13, so almost 8 years now. The longest I ever made it without a smoke was a month, but that was before the surgery when I could pass my addiction up for food.
I lost a pack of cigarettes yesterday and decided now is the time. It's already 2:30 and I haven't had one yet, but pretty soon the craving is going to come...
I was told not to chew gum, so I don't know what else to do to get my mind off it.
I'm going to do my best!! Wish me luck

Hi Rachel,
I've had 2 friends who were successful with Chantix (a prescription medication).
I myself quit for 11 months, after smoking for about 4 years, "cold turkey" but I have since decided to smoke again. I really did not go through any withdrawal but I just really seem to enjoy smoking. After giving up food, sex and alcohol, I felt like something had to give, and nicotine seemed the most benign of the 4 to take up again.
I don't plan on smoking the rest of my life and I know that I will quit at some point for good...but not today. Good luck to you.

I quit smoking in 1991, after smoking for 25 years. There were no prescriptions at that time, so there were far more limited choices. I'd tried "cold turkey" in years prior. But I really wanted to stop, and I tried hypnosis as a last resort at the time. It worked !! It was a "group therapy" session of about 40 people. We all laid down on the floor with the pillows we brought. A forty five minute session started, where I really felt relaxed and don't have much memory of exactly what was said. For hypnosis to work well, you really have to be a good subject, and really want results. I kept a half a carton of cigarettes on my work truck seat for 6 months as a test of the hypnosis. I finally threw the cigarettes away, and have not smoked once since 1991. Just a suggestion. DAVE

I've been a smoker for 40 years. Quit for 6 months after hypnosis, tried the patches and had bad nightmares, and then tried Chantix before my surgery. What a difference! I quit for 4 months and have restarted, damn my hide anyhow! I've just refilled the prescription and am going to make another run at it. Best of luck to you. . . I'll swing a chicken for you if you'll do the same for me!

I'm in the process of quitting with Chantix. I've been trying w/o meds for quite some time as my insurance won't cover a lot of meds. A few weeks ago I had had enough trying and knew it was time for a boost to help me so I asked my pcp to write a 'script for Chantix. I started taking it on November 1 and haven't had a cigarette since Sunday. I know it's only been 2 days, but still...I want and need WLS. That is the BIG reason I'm doing it now.
Now, I'm not going to tell you that I haven't wanted nicotine since I started the meds. I have. Not as much, but I have. From the 1st until the 8th, I smoked about a pack total (I have been a pack + a day smoker for about 15 years...since I was 14). What is really helping me get through the days is realizing how much I've saved already. Hubby and I are both doing the meds and so far, as pack a day smokers, we have saved about $75 in the last 10 days.
Not to go on, but my Dad recently quit using Chantix, too. He has been a 3+ pack a day smoker for 42 years. He had been through hypnosis, Wellbutrin, cold turkey, gum, patches...the list goes on. He had even tried Chantix before. Twice! He started Chantix again, taking his first pill on April 8, 2009. April 15, he had his last cigarette and hasn't had one since then. He did, although, use Nicorette during the entire time he was on Chantix. He needed the help to get him through the cravings. He has been totally nicotine free since mid- June.
Good luck! If you want a quit buddy, I'm up for it. It's hard work when those craving****
