411 on Hair Loss
I have often wondered, when reading all the posts about hair loss, if anyone has ever paid much attention to those folks who have and have not lost hair and what age they were... Reason I wondered is because I have 2 friends who both had RnY (one in her 20's and the other in her 50's). The friend in her 20's didn't lose any hair and the one in her 50's lost it pretty badly. I have just wondered if there is any correlation...

That is a good point, but also diet and protein could be factors too.
I really want to know the point of origin of the hair loss. Is it around the scalp or the top of the head or does it fall out in clumps.

I started losing 3 months out and it was from all over. Not clumps and not in one spot. I think now, seven months out, it has maybe stopped or at least greatly reduced. I got a shorty haircut and colored it too. It helps a lot! you won't have clumps of bald spots but it might be noticable. I take biotin 2x a day and zinc once a day and I don't know if that's helping but it seems to me to be a great help. I heard it won't help you in keeping the hair because you lose it due in part to anesthesia and part to low protein and vitamin deficiency, but it will help with new growth.
I am 4 1/2 months out and started loosing large clumps of hair about a month ago. However, I do have long and thick curly hair and you cant tell Im loosing it. I did dye my hair and had it trimmed about 2 weeks ago and I have noticed Im not loosing as much. I also upgraded to a curl enhancing shampoo and conditioner and I dont think my hair has ever been prettier.
The hair loss thing isn't just in the first few months either.
At 5 years out, I still go through small bouts of it. I went through a good bit of hair loss over the summer and it's now growing in real thick and I can see the new growth around my hair line.
I get tons of protein, and take all my vitamins, and it still happens every so often. And I know I am not the only one out there. So just remember, that it can happen again later down the road, not just in the first few months of surgery.
Just remember, it IS temporary, and more noticeable to ourselves than others.
