Right, but you can order 1/2 portions without flashing that damned card.

This whole WLS card thing has always baffled me.  I had my initial surgery in 2003 and never understood why I would be expected to pull some card out, essentially exposing my medical history to a random server and the people I'm dining with.  I'm an adult.  If I want to order off the kids menu I ask.  If they say no, I order what I want and take the rest home.  Why does there have to be so much drama around this?

Just cause I have hypertension, do I demand that every chef cook my food without salt?  I think not.

Asking a chef to cook without salt or without something you may be allergic to is perfectly reasonable!

I agree that asking is perfectly reasonable, but expecting every chef to comply is unreasonable and getting upset if they don't is even crazier.  Also, if I ask, I'm not going to reveal that I have hypertension.  It's none of their business.

I don't really think expecting them leave the salt out of your dish is unreasonable, if it is a dish they are preparing just for you.  Now, if you order soup and they have a big pot already made up, obviously they can't leave out the salt because it's already in there.  It would be unreasonable to expect them to cook up a new batch without salt for you.

If you can't have salt - which is something a lot of people can't have - unless the chef is cooking pre-made items, leaving out salt isn't a big deal.

And I doubt anyone is going to say, "Oh, why can't you have salt?" and then argue with you about it so there' s no need to divulge any personal medical information.

If your doctor gave you a card that said "no salt for this patient", would you use it?  How ridiculous does that sound?  Same thing.  So asinine.

I got the card from my surgeon.   They gave it to me before my surgery.

You know what else works that is less embarrassing?

"Hi, I was looking around and noticed that your portions are huge! I was wondering if it would be possible to get half of *whatever I order* instead of a full portion?"
