I have a scheduled drug test this coming tuesday and i have a question regarding taking said drug test.  The only drug i have taken was prescribed percocest/vicotin (sorry typo) which were given to me to treat pain. I ve been out of surgery slightly over a year and have taken the above on ocassion when i have had pain in the incision area.  The second ? im also on a serious workout plan and take several supplaments which i purchase leagaly from GNC.  My urine can range from being extremely clear or an almost glowing yellow (likely after taking b12)

My concern is will i test false positive. Do i tell my perspective employer or the lab tech prior to taking the exam my concern or shall i not be concerned.

Don't be concerned unless you have a reason to be. If something shows up they will ask you about it. Show proof of the medication and then sign a release for them to speak with your dr. Sometime asprin can show a false positive but as a RNY patient you shouldn't take asprin anyway.

You really should tell them you are taking a pain killer. They are looking for opiates when they do the drug test. Neither perocet and vicodin are opiates but they may cause a false positive.

I am concerned that at a year out you still need something for incision pain. There shouldn't be any. You need to talk to your surgeon about that.

As for the vitamins and other supplements, they won't affect the drug test. B12 makes the urine yellow, that's al, won't effect anytihng else.

Actually both Percocet and Vicodin are opiates. But they have been perscribed to you.  It will depend on how extensive the test is. Honestly I wouldn't tell them and then let them ask, same as any supplements you are taking. Usually what jobs want to know if you are on illegal narcotics, or depending on the job, any medications at all. Do what you feel is right, personally I would keep it personal until it comes up, since they are your perscription don't worry about it.

PS good luck on the job

RNY on 08/05/08 with
extra water-soluble vitamins are passed out in urine, which shouldn't affect your test.  Vicodin and Percoset are both opiates, which usually only show up for about a week after you have taken them.  Hopefully you are not still having incision pain for which you need pain meds after a year - that sounds like a problem to me.  I would not tell your prospective employer unless there is some problem with your test. -Sarah

purchase your own drug test and see how it comes back.

Percocet or Vicodin will show up as opiates on a drug screen but if you have a legitimate prescription for them then there shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully you wouldn't take these meds and try to work. Not a good idea.

If you dont list them, you risk being reject as a fail without the oportunity to explain later,  is the RX current. or are these pills left over?  your urine should be straw color is the normal

Many years ago I took a drug test and was on several pain killers and antidepressants at the time and I passed the drug test with no questions asked.  They are looking for drugs that are no issued by prescription.  Vitamins are certainly not a problem.  If the pain killers come up, you have the bottle to show them that they were prescribed or you could get a letter from the doctor saying they were prescribed but I wouldn't worry about it - all should be fine.  They are looking for illegal drugs.
