Hello I am 8 days out from RNY and this evening after finishing my protein I noticed my tongue was peeling. I went to the bathroom and it has white spots all back my tongue and is peeling in certain areas. This reminds me of thrush when my son was a baby he had it. Do you get thrush after RNY?? Should I call doctor now or wait till morning?

My tongue did the same exact thing when I was on clear liquids for the day prior until 9 days out... It will go away after you start eating food and not having so much citric acid from like popsicles and crystal light in your mouth.

I was in the hospital for 6 days when I had my surgery, and I noticed my tongue felt strange and was very coated the last couple days I was there.  It got worse when I got home and then started have reddish blotches on it too.  I was getting concerned and was thinking it might be thrush, as that was the only thing I'd heard of, but it went away pretty quickly and I haven't had any problem since then.  Just wierd!  I have seen a few other posts regarding this, so it must not be that uncommon.

It's thrush.  It happens to a lot of people after WLS.  Call your doctor, he/she can prescribe a "swish and spit" med that treats it.

Call your doctor!  It sounds just like thrush which I also have and I'm two weeks post-op.  They can prescribe you an oral rinse that you swish and spit.

As the others have said, it does sound like thru**** will make your food taste bad too. Call you doc and he will most likely order a fungicide to kill the fungus infection.

We all have this fungus in our mouth and if our immune system is compromised by surgery  it surfaces and must be killed.

It is fairly common following gastric surgeries. Unless it becomes systemic, it is not dangerous but is very annoying.

When you start to take the anti fungal be sure to scrape the white crud off of your cheeks, tongue and gums.

Yep, sounds like thrush. Your doc can give you a swish-and-spit prescription to clear it up quickly.

I had thrush 6 days out, called my nurse coordinator, she called in rx for Diflucan(also used for yeast infections & very cheap) I took that, got a new tooth brush & some mouthwash at Meijer also try holding/slowly eating yogurt. It took me about 4 days to get rid of it. It is kinda freaky & gross huh? Good Luck!
