Ha!  How funny about the African lion:)  I appreciate the humor, believe me!!:)

I don't think it was serum b1 b/c it says Vitamin B1 (Plasma) whereas other levels( such as Folate) say Folate, Serum.  I know I'm not much help, but this is so confusing!!  I don't even know if serum or plasma can be considered the same when interpreting results.  I WISH I knew!!

Thank you so much for your help.

my b1 is done 2 different ways - My Endo does :serum/plasma range 9-44 - in which case her level is on the low end of normal.  the other way that my NUT does is Whole Blood and the range is: 87-280.  Hers was done the first way - plasma.

ARUP's Laboratory Test Directory

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Plasma : 0080389

Mnemonic: VIT B1 P

Methodology: High Performance Liquid Chromatography
Performed: Mon-Sat
Reported: 2-5 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 7 mL green (sodium or lithium heparin) or two 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2 EDTA).

Transport:  3 mL plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.2 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Amber Transport Tube.  Protect from light during collection, storage, and shipment.

Remarks:  CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Protect from light during collection, storage, and shipment.  Separate plasma from cells ASAP. Whole blood is preferred over plasma, which is more light sensitive.  Refer to Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Whole Blood (0080388).

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonfrozen specimens. Specimens not protected from light.

Stability:  After separation from cells: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 6 months (-20°C)

Disease Topics Vitamins
Reference Interval:
8-30 nmol/L

Interpretive Data: Total thiamine, measured as thiamine (vitamin B1) and thiamine monophosphate, is reported. However, the biologically active form of the vitamin, thiamine diphosphate (TDP), is best measured in whole blood, and is not found in measurable concentration in plasma. Plasma thiamine concentration reflects recent intake rather than body stores.

Note: Whole blood is the preferred specimen for thiamine assessment.  Approximately 80% of thiamine present in whole blood is found in red blood cells.  Refer to Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Whole Blood (0080388).

Elizabeth,
Thank you!  Thank you!  I at lea st have something to go by until my docto's appointment.  From reading what you posted, it sounds like I need to have my B1 levels read out of whole blood rather than plasma counts for a more accurate measure, especially since I'm having the symptoms I'm having.  Even so, my 11 doesn't look as far away from the out of range as I would like.  I think my labs may have to be a redo on this one.

I so appreciate everyone's help.  I'll be able to take lots of good information to my neurology appointment Thursday.  I'll keep you posted on what I find out:)

Blessings!

Valorie,

Your welcome.  That is why I sent you the entire article to you.  Plasma levels only reflect your recent intake.

11 is at the low end of normal.  The range is 9 - 44.  When I was at 10, my NUT put me on 100mg 3 times per day because I was having terrible cramps in my feet and toes.  After being on the B1 for about 2 weeks, the cramps went away and my level is normal now - I still take the 100mg 3 times a day to keep my level normal.
