Does anyone else get a metallic taste in their mouth?  It doesn't happen all the time for me but it does occassonally and it is so irritating!  I have it right now. What is causing this and can I prevent it?

Are still losing quite a bit of weight? I know that's a common sign of ketosis, and makes our breath smell weird too. It usually tapers off as the weight loss slows.

If that's the case, you should make sure you're drinking plenty of water to flush out the ketones, and make life easier on the liver and kidneys.

i actually hit a plateau and didn't lose anything for three months!!  I just now am losing again, having dropped 5 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I hadn't noticed any bad breath recently just this weird occasional metallic taste.  I googled this just now and there were many causes listed as to why one could have a metallic taste in mouth and one of the items listed was a high protein diet.  So, hmmm, maybe that is it?  I do definatly need to increase the water, having a hard time with that.  thank you!  BTW- I noticed your ticker at the bottom, holy cow you are almost to your goal that is great!!

I had the metallic taste for 3 weeks right after the surgery. Everything tasted like aluminum, no matter what I ate. Could be ketosis, but it could also be the utensils that you are using. I discovered that the baby spoons I used cause the bad taste. Just a thought.

My surgeon recommends Clorets gum because it has chlorophyll in it to relieve bad tastes/breath in the mouth.  He says just chew a piece for a few seconds and then spit it out.  I'm buying some today because I am having this issue too.

I did not get the metallic taste in my mouth (thankfully) but I did have ketosis with the bad breath (as my BF was so kind to inform me lol).  Try taking a sugarfree breath mint or tic tac... it helps.  good luck.  Maryjo

Yes, definitely ketosis.
Picture your body burning your fat stores for energy to make you feel better.  Ketosis is where your body isn't getting enough instant energy (carbs), so it turns to the fat stores for energy to burn.

Thank you all!  that makes sense because all have been eatting is protein, cheese and vegetables to get going on my weight loss again after the long stall.  So, being in ketosis is a good thing?

It is good, as it means the weight is coming off, but it's hard on the organs because all the junk that has been stored in the fat cells are emptying into your system as well. That's one of the reasons we aren't to get pregnant soon after WLS, because the ketones can be toxic to a fetus.

Drink lots of water to help flush them out, and just try gum for a while till it passes.
