1st Annual post-surgery physical

My surgeon doesn't do any follow up so it's up to me to have all my levels checked w/ my primary.  I never did anything the first year--had so many complications as it was.  But I finally went.

She found 3 issue:

1) nodules on my thyroid (I had a scan done, we'll see)
2) Low Vitamin D (recommended 1000 units a day)
3) Low B-12 (need monthly injections

I guess it's not so bad.  Everything else looks good so I'll focus on the positive.

Any suggestions on what kind of vitamin D I should take?  Any special brand?

HI, calcium citrate (calcium carbonate needs stomach acid to disolve it & we don't have much of that anymore-I just made this mistake recently!) Bariatric Advantage has chewables & lozenges-I got chocolate they're kind of gross but tolerable. I tried calcium citrate petites are cheaper and are to be swallowed but they are huge & had to cut them down to 4 parts-what a pain! As for thyroid hopefully you only need meds for it and they are cheap & small! Good luck!

For Vitamin D, you want D3, and it does come in liquid form--one drop = 1000 IU.  There are different brands, but the drops are easy and tasteless!

If you're low on D, then 1000 probably won't be sufficient.  Do you know what your level was?

I say this because the current recommendation is for normies to take 2000 just to maintain their levels.. and that's with no malabsorption.  1000 iu in a malabsorber is very little.

Her letter only states that I'm low.

You need to get actual copies of your lab sheets -- so you can see what your levels are.

You'll want to take DRY D3, and I'd recommend a much higher dosage than 1000 units.  I take 100,000 iu every day.  Once it tanks it can take years to bring it back up.  I speak from experience.  Do yourself a favor and at least take 50,000 iu.  They come in a tiny capsule.  The kind you'll get around home is in a oil form, part of what you'll malabsorb.  The dry vitamins are hard to come by, especially in large doses.  You can find them at vitalady.com, though.

Why do you have to do B12 injections?  I use the nasal spray (prescription).  It works great for me.  If you don't like injections (and who does???), you might ask if you could do the nasal spray instead.

I didn't know this was an option.  I'll ask.  Thanks!

My Vit D was low but now back to normal. I take BA dry Vit D 5000 units. Be sure to take the dry Vit D. It is better absorbed by RNY patients. Also take your Calcium, because they work together. I take the BA cherry chewables, because they taste good to me. I take B-12 from Costco. They are cheaper there and I have never had a problem with my B-12.
