See my post about METHYLcobalamin vs. cyanocobalamin.  You're taking one that your body cannot process efficiently, even in liquid form.

I use the B12 nasal spray (it's a prescription medication).  I only have to use it once a week and it's so much easier than doing the sublingual B12.  I just had my six month post-op lab work done and my B12 was actually higher than normal!

I actually use the B12 patch.  I don't remember the brand of sublingual I tried, but it made me nauseous.

I found a sub-lingual liquid B complex at Puritans pride. They don't taste the greatest, but they seem to be of good quality as evidenced by my labs. My nutritionist read the lable and was very happy with the contents. I also take a B1 supplement because that was not in the liquid.

B complex isn't sufficient for us after RNY, despite what your nutritionist said.  You will need an additional B12 supplement.

Our body can store B12 for years, so even if your numbers are good now, you're only seven months post op, and your B12 stores can drop like a rock at any time.  This is not something that you should take for granted, because a B12 deficiency can cause pernicious - meaning DEADLY - anemia, as well as severe and irreversible neurological problems.

A few extra dollars per month and one more vitamin per day won't kill you, but a B12 deficiency CAN.

The best one I found is by Solgar which I got at Whole Foods - tis cherry and dissolves really fast.  I've seen it on amazon too.

I actually have smoe from BA that I'm trying to get rid of as well -- they took forever so I just chew them with my other ones.  My B-12 levels are high so I really only need one a week, but I chew one everyday - figure it evens out.   Labs were fine so time will tell.

Be sure that you are taking Solgar's METHYLcobalamin formula.  They sell both kinds.  This is from their website:

http://www.solgar.co.uk/notes2/boots/vitamin-b12-2924006/

Pernicious anaemia is a special form of vitamin B12 malabsorption due to impaired ability of certain cells in the stomach to make intrinsic factor (which is true after RNY - since we have less stomach and therefore less ability to produce sufficient intrinsic factor) —a substance needed for normal absorption of vitamin B12. By definition, all people with pernicious anaemia are vitamin B12-deficient. They require either vitamin B12 injections or oral supplementation with very high levels (1000 mcg per day) of vitamin B12.

Is there any chance that you're allergic to that formula? I am allergic to Vitamin C. I can have it in food with no prob, but If I take it on a continuous basis I get flu like symptoms that don't go away until I stop taking it.  You may want to try a few formulas.

Minor Symptoms of Vitamin C Overdose

Vitamin C Overdose can take form in a number of ways. If you are currently taking Vitamin C, and notice any of the following symptoms, decrease your dosage immediately, as these are all minor signs of a small Vitamin C Overdose:

  • Nausea
  • Strong smelling Urine
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Upset stomach

Diarrhea is also a sign that you are taking too much Vitamin C; however, doctors suggest using this sign to gauge your absolute maximum Vitamin C intake. Diarrhea resulting from excessive amounts of Vitamin C is considered just below potentially dangerous levels, and can actually result in certain health benefits such as a lowered risk of colon cancer.

I've used the sublingual B-12 from Trader Joe's - but they're tiny in size and my hand are huge...not a good matchup.

Now I use Spring Valley's Sublingual 2500mcg - I usually find them at Wal-Mart.  These are my favorite, they kind of have a cherry flavor to them.  They're larger than the ones from TJ's so they are easier to pick up & put in my pill holder.....and now I sound like I'm 90 :)
