I'm 2.5 years out and 26.5 weeks pregnant.

I went for my ultrasound today, and because of the way the baby's placenta is positioned, my arteries are not carrying the amount of blood they would like to see.  The baby is measuring perfect and healthy.  It's not a huge problem, but can result in pre-eclampsia (sp)

My OB wants me to take 81mg of baby aspirin a day until 36 weeks.

Aspirin is an NSAID, why can't we take these again?  I need to take it to thin my blood a little, should I call my surgeon tomorrow to get his take on it?  Anyone have a similar situation??

Thanks a lot

Karen

Call your surgeon.  There are heart patients that need to continue to take asprins.  First off make sure that it's coated, not just a plain asprin.  I believe there is also something that you can take as a "protector" for your stomach as well.

Most people I know if they don't take the coated they will take it with applesause to try to protect the pouch.  Luckily you won't be taking it for long.  But call your surgeon and ask their advice.  =)

Good luck. =)

Hi plusizedbarbie, wishing you and the baby the very best!

I take Celebrex (an NSAID) as I have severe arthritis and am waiting for knee replacements.  My rheumatologist worked with my gastric internist and they determined that the chance of an ulcer was worth it in terms of the alternative (morphine for pain).  I also take a double dose of omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor,  (can use prilosec OTC) as an extra added measure to prevent the ulcer.

You need to weigh the pros and cons.

Hope this helps!
Robin

Carafate is sometimes given to protect the pouch when an NSAID has to be taken for a time.  I don't know about it's safety during pregnancy.  Ask your doctor about it.  Wishing you and baby girl the best!  Rebecca

I had some heart issues following my RNY and have been on aspirin ever since.  First I was also taking the 81mg chewable aspirin, which I later found out was a no-no.  They put me on 81mg enteric coated aspirin.  Just check for this kind.  Apparently the coating keeps it from breaking down in your pouch and travels thru the intestines before it is broken down.

I too was concerned, but they ensured me it was okay taking the enteric coated and an antacid.  I take an actual pill (not like tums or rolaids) antacid twice a day, and apparently that is also supposed to help with taking aspirin.  I've been on over 5 weeks now and feel fine, no complications.  Just ask about what I said above and you should be fine...

Ask your doc about low dose magnesium. It's used to treat pre-eclampsia after it happens, but in higher doses. Ask him if you should be taking a preventative dose now. NOT magnesium oxide. It'd be magnesium citrate PILLS (not the bowel prep).

Aspirin is caustic for us. Tell him you'll need the "poop on a card" at least twice before delivery, ok? Your biggest danger is not having gut pain, but having a gastric bleed since aspirin thins the blood AND the mucous membrane of your pouch.
