after surgery? HI Everyone, I have Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) and i am very self conscious about it.  I don't have diabetes but was wondering if after surgery I will still have AN.  Thanks for your help.

 Hi there,

I had the DS 4 months ago, and my AN has faded quite a lot. I can tell my insulin resistance is improving in other ways, which is one of the great metabolic effects of the DS. I'm hoping it might go away all together soon.

Can I ask what surgery you are looking at? That might make a difference in terms of what you can expect with the AN.

Yes, it does go away - slowly, fading a little at a time, but it does go away.

Thanks!!!! I believe I am going with RNY, I am finishing my bariatric classes at the end of March.  Something about having a "port" in me freaks me out.

Honey, you have a BMI of 58.8. You REALLY need to consider the DS. It's been shown to give the very BEST long-term results, both in maintained weight loss ANd resolution of co-morbidities---especially in those with a starting BMI greater than 50.

Visit the various surgical boards here, as well as the 'Regrets', 'Failed WLS', and 'Revisions' boards. Learn about the Big Four forms of WLS---LapBand, Sleeve, RNY/gastric bypass, and DS (duodenal switch).

Hi There!

I had a pretty bad case of it.  I actually didn't know what it was when I was younger and I did everything I could to get rid of it.  I actually used to soak my elbows in 1/2 cut lemons with a bit of bleach in them!  When I actually did go to a dermatologist, I was basically told it was a "fat" thing and if I lost the weight, it might go away.  I was always embarrassed about it.  It looked like I never scrubbed my neck, elbows, underarms, inner thighs or knees.

I hated when people asked what I had around my neck!  Fast forward to 20 years later.  I had the DS and when I started losing the weight, the condition became a non-issue.  I don't have a bit of discoloration now anywhere.

I know that you said that you were leaning towards an RNY vs a lap band.  Have you ever considered the DS?  You should at least check it out  dsfacts.com

I was going to get an RNY, but I really wanted something that I could live with (my personal eating habits).  I think the RNY is a great option, but I believe in making sure you look at all your options.  You should check out the VSG as well (this is 1/2 of the DS surgery)

Best of luck!

I had it in all my joints/folds and on my neck. It's completely gone accept a slight bit on my upper inner thighs. Nobody sees that but me and my husband, anyway, so I could care less about that bit.
So yes, the more you lose, the lighter it gets.
