Antibiotics that are RNY friendly??

Alright friends, I have a killer ear infection in both ears.  I'll spare you my rant about the pain and cut to the chase...  This is the first time I'll need antibiotics since I had RNY in July.  My surgeon does not have any recommendations for antibiotics.

Have any of you been advised about which (if any) antibiotics to avoid or have any of you had bad experiences with particular antibiotics following surgery?  I don't know if any of them are difficult to dissolve and I know some can cause quite a bit of stomach upset.

Hopefully I can give my primary care doctor a head's up.

Thanks to all!!

I am not sure why you are asking if they are difficult to dissolve, you should be able to swallow pills by now at 8 months out.  You can take almost all antibiotics, some are just harder on the stomach than others.  I would stay away from erythromycin.  The Zpack is great but some people find it upsets there stomach but it is great for ear infections.  If you are not allergic to penecillin, there are lots to choose from between amoxicillin and various in the cephalosporin family.  You can also take Levaquin.

Any of them should work.  I would get a liquid because the better drugs like Augmentin are going to be huge mega tablets and that might not be fun to have sitting in your pouch.

If you take table salt, put it in one of your thin black socks, heat it in a pan... not too hot.  Just heat it so it's soothing, lay on your side with the bad ear up.  Lay the sock on your ear.  It should conform to the shape of your ear.  It's amazingly soothing.  Try it now, it's instant relief.

Is there a smoker in your house?  Neighbor?  Have them blow warm smoke in your ear.  Kinda gross if you aren't a smoker but sure feels good.

There is an Rx your doc can give you to cut the pain in your ear, it's an eardrop.  Insist on it.

Any antibiotic should work, just get it in liquid for just a bit less stomach upset.

I was treated for ear infection and bronchitis 2 weeks ago with Augmentin.  I broke the big tablet in half and had no trouble pouch wise but I did get loose stools for a couple days after starting it.  I didn't have any stomach upset though.  Hope you feel better soon Chris.

My only suggestion is not to get Ceftin in liquid.  Only because the liquid litterally took the shine off my stainless steel sink when I puked it up from not being able to handle the taste and burn of it.

I just took the Z pack for bronchitis and it was totally fine.  Five days later, I was good as new and I was seriously sick!  I just had it with my coffee with creamer in the morning.  I was also on liquid amoxicilin a couple days right after surgery for an infection from where my IV was placed.  I didn't have problems with that either.

Whatever you take if you make sure it is not on a completely empty stomach and have some yogurt every day it will minimize your gi upset. GL
