how long did it take you to get approved for gastric bypass surgery?

I finally got approved to see the surgeon in October of last year & it took me awhile to get to actually meet with him. I met with him in February & I am working on getting all my tests done. But what happens after the testing? How long is the average wait before you're told yes or no?

Hmmmm...I had my first meeting with the surgeon and within 3 months I had my surgery. I think the package was sent to insurance about 2 weeks before my surgery and it took BCBS about a week to approve the surgery. My history was pretty straight forward and I had lots of documented attempts at weight loss.

I hope that helps....

I started looking into WLS in Sept. had my consultation, found this website and became a member. Got all my testing and back up of all my attempts, wrote a letter to BSBC of IL and so did PCP.  By the later part of OCT was approved within a week of sending data to BCBS.  Scheduled to have surgery in Nov. But had to postpone until Feb due to 1375.00 deductible I had to pay upfront before having surgery per the hospital.  I was so glad that I waited as it helped me to get mentally prepared.

Reached Onederland 5/26/2010 199.2 lbs
Highest weight 280 9/2009 Surgery weight 250 2/2010

Took BCBS a week to deny our first attempt at approval (think it was just a stall tactic, they claimed they didn't understand something my dr. had written), the dr. office called to clarify the statements in the letter/documents in question, and it was about 2 weeks after that to get the approval.

my first surgeon appt was in oct. i got all me pre tests done within the first month, once all that got sent to the ins it only took couple weeks. the only reason it took 4 months for surgery was cause my surgeon was so backed up with surgeries. he even had to start doing surgeries on saturdays cause so many wanted him. once you get all your tests done it normally doesnt take too long. the only thing i suggest is stay on top of your test results are being sent in to both surgeons office and ins i found few times they werent glad i was checking on it or this all could have taken me forever. lots of luck on your journey =)

It's different for everyone speciallly depending on what type of insurance you have and what requisities they want you to follow (or if you're paying for it).

I was extremely lucky with the entire process, it took about 3 months from start to finish:
I had my surgeon's appt on March 2nd (my bday), had the psychic eval a week later, my insurance required a 6 month diet history (from weigh****chers or jenny craig -- which i had done just the prior year and had proof), the insurance company took about 2 weeks to approve (thank god it was approved right away, as some people need to go thru appeal processes), I had cardiac clearance at the End of April and by May 29th (3 months after meeting surgeon for the first timel) I was having surgery.

good luck to you and keep us posted.

I've met all of the insurance criteria, gotten the clearance/ letter from my primary care doctor.. and am now mostly patiently waiting for the go ahead and get a DS. Does anyone know about how long it could take? I would like to have the surgery before the end of the year since I am almost at my deductible for the year:) I have Anthem/Blue Cross Blue Shield.

RNY on 12/12/17

I began my journey on July 21st of 2017 and was finally approved for ROUX EN Y surgery on 12/12/2017.. I had to do the 3 month diet, psyche evaluation and ekg through MediCal.. My surgery would have been sooner, but my doctor is so booked.. Just a word of encouragement for EVERYONE going through the process, DO NOT GIVE UP.. NO ONE, but us, knows how difficult the struggle is... My weight right now is 280lbs and I am MORE than excited to see the scale begin to drop... We are united through a struggle that MANY will NEVER understand, and to that I say, "Victory is OURS"!!!! Fight the good fight and encourage those that struggle as we have!! ??

Has your surgeon submitted your paperwork to the insurance company yet?

Which form of WLS are you planning on having? Your profile doesn't mention your BMI, but it does say that you have arhtritis in both knees. Based on that, I'm going to recommend that you seriously consider either the Sleeve or the DS, because either of those will still allow you to take NSAIDs for the arthritis---RNY won't.
