I had the Nissan in 1998 and my RNY in Oct. 2008.  I went to about 5 surgeons - 2 refused to do and 3 were willing but only was that I was willing to use.  He wasn't sure until he got in there if he had to take it down or not, but in the end he did have to take it down and then do the RNY. I will say, I was nervous that my reflux would come back but it didn't.  I have none.  I do take 1 Protonix a day as a precaution.  The surgery is much more risky than a regular RNY and you need someone very skilled and that has done this before.  My esophagus tore a little bit from all the scar tissue that formed over the 10 years when he took it down but it was easily repaired.

I know the band can't be done, I know RNY and DS can be done but I dont' recommend the sleeve because the sleeve puts you at high risk for reflux.  RNY is lowest risk for reflux, it goes away with almost all people.

Just FYI---the Sleeve IS the stomach portion of the DS, and therefore would have exactly the same risk for reflux.

That said, I have had NO reflux since my DS 6.5 years ago, and I do NOT take any sort of acid reducer.

I know the sleeve is the stomach portion of the DS but I also know that a large portion of sleeve patients end up with severe reflux postop. I don't know the how many end up with it from DS but definitely more than with the RNY.  You are lucky that you are reflux free and I am sure many are but there are also many that do have it.

I'll be glad to answer any questions that I CAN, but I need to tell you that I did NOT have a Nissan fundo---just a DS.

My daughter had the nissen fundo done in 1989. She was told the bypass was out of the question since she had prior stomache surgery(the fundo) in which she didn't want that any way. Originally she wanted the lapband in which she was told at the last minute that was out too as the scarring was probably too thick for the band to fit around. Then the sleeve was suggested since our insurance paid for it. BIG MISTAKE. The sleeve was done 6/7/2010. We were not told the wrap wouldbe removed because there wasn't rook for both the sleeve and the wrap. My daughter's reflux is so bad that she has been in and out of hospital. Due to complications she is now having to have a bypass. Wouldn't recommend if you had a fundo.

That is why I had the gastric bypass.  They weren't sure going in if they would have to take down the wrap but in the end they did.  Being I had the gastric bypass, I am reflux free.  the bypass has the highest success rate for treating reflux.  I am totally reflux free.

Wow, the sleeve is the LAST procedure I would get if I previously had the need for a NF. Bypass should have been the only procedure that would be done. :o(
