Diet pills after Gastric Bypass

Hey all!  I need advice.  I am about 5.5 months out from my surgery.  I have lost 80lbs.  I have been stuck here for the last 2-3 weeks.  I am considering taking the diet pill Adipex.  Any opinions on this would be helpful.  Anyone have any alternatives?  My regular doctor said that it is pretty safe but she won't prescribe it until I am a whole year out and my surgeon already told me it will be nearly impossible to lose weight after the first year.  Anyone else heard this?  I am just lost and need some different points of view.

Thanks,

Weight loss will continue for the first 18 months with little effort on your part.  You are no where near half way point...you are in a NORMAL stall.

Don't do the diet pills...we are a society of RIGHT NOW, which is a shame.  Get off the scale.  I haven't weight myself since I was a tight 16.  Now I am a 10/12 and well over a year out.

Just do what you were told to do post-op.  Water, protein, low carbs etc.  You should know what to do by now...just continue.

Good Luck,

Well said Erika, I wholeheartedly agree. Although it would take an army to keep me off the scales - just can't help it.

Here is the perspective I use for not using the scale.

The scale is a big fat liar!  it fluctuates constantly and can cause a lot of stress.  Now, clothes will not lie...they either fit or they don't.

I stopped using the scale when like the OP, I too was losing my mind after a long stall.  I read a poster on here who said she uses her clothes and not the scale and I decided to at least try it.  Well, I have had peace of mind and I wholeheartedly suggest it to everyone.

I haven't weight myself since I think August, and I am much happier!

Oh I utterly agree with you, and I hope to get to that point. However, I see the fluctuations and kinda know where they head and the patterns they take so I no longer stress about it, I just can't bear the not knowing.  So until I can be as strong as you, I just can't drag myself away from them.  By 2011 my goal is to have stopped weighing.

80 pounds is a great amount to have lost so far! You are only a short way out from your surgery, and I don't think you are anywhere near done losing weight yet. It sounds like you are just going through a pause like all of us experience at some point in this process. Personally, I would not go to any sort of diet pill at this stage in the game. Our bodies do not lose at a constant rate. There will be pauses and "stalls" along the way, but honestly, the losing will begin again. Especially for you as you are only 5.5 months out. I have also seen many posters who are still losing after a year, albeit at a slower rate of course. Exercise and watching your intake will help keep the losing streak going for a while from what I understand from" long termers" I would hold off on diet pills. Which surgery did you have?

I agree with the others. NO DIET PILLS. You just need to have some patience. This is not an overnight miracle. It is a process that takes time and patience. You have lost a great amount in a short time. Your body needs time to adjust and then it will start burning the pounds away again. Dont mess up by getting in too much of a hurry.

Your PCP is smarter than your surgeon.

Shock, shock.

It's not wise to take drugs because of a normal and expected stall.

Let me get this straight. You have lost  44% of your excess weight in under six months, which BTW puts you just a few pounds from being a WLS "success." You have lost an average of 3.5 pounds per week.

The scale stopping moving for a couple of weeks and you want to go on DIET PILLS?

That would be a really really stupid move. Don't do it.
