Clindamycin question

Hello, I do have a call into my surgeon.  I have been taking Clindamycin for three days for an abscessed tooth that I have been going to great lengths to save.  As time goes by it hurts more and more to swallow.  It hurts going down and hurts in my back after wards.  (The tooth feels tons better.) I am five years out and have a cast iron pouch.  Is this drug contra-indicated for gastric bypass patients?  What are other's experiences with it?  I called my surgeon instead of going off of it at the advice on my pharmacist because of my poor tooth.  Thanks so much, Loris

Edit:  Surgeon called and said there were no known contraindication, but to call my dentist for a different Rx.  I forgot I had his beeper number.  So I am waiting to hear from him.  The surgeon said to please call back if the dentist couldn't find an alternative to the clindamycin.

There are no reasons Gastric bypass patients can't take it.  It is very strong and can irritate the stomach though.  I can't take it, I go into anaphalactic shock.  Biaxin is  a great antibiotic for dental infections.  I had a severely abscessed tooth many years ago and that is what they gave me.  I did end up having to have it pulled but it calmed it down enough to allow me to have it pulled. It was so severely abscessed they thought they were going to have to admit me to the hospital.  Good luck and be careful.  Tooth infections can spread into the bloodstream very quickly if left untreated or with the wrong antibiotic for too long.

Be careful!  Clindamycin is extremely strong and irritating to the gastric pouch.  I am also 5 years out (actually today, lol) and have incredibly painful marginal ulcers that resulted from antibiotic and NSAID use during a tooth infection last year that ended in a root canal and an apicoectomy.  Now they refuse to go away and I possibly face another surgery due to it.  Your symptoms sound just like my ulcer symptoms...pain and difficulty swallowing is the first sign and then once it went into my back I knew something was wrong.  Make sure you tell your surgeon that as well.  You should be scoped and checked for any ulcerations.  It doesn't get better, but only worse from that point forward, unfortunately :-(  I always get liquid antibiotics, usually penicillin, flagyl or amoxicillin.

I use the topical version and BOTH can block your intake of folic acid and vit K. If you take it for long, maybe supplement those and have them tested to be sure you didn't lose them completely.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
