Bob Evans Restaurants
I went to Bob Evans restaurant yesterday. I explained to them that I had have gastric bypass surgery and needed to order from the kiddies menu. They told me I could order from it, but I would have to pay adult prices. I ended up ordering a appetizer and that was to much. When I came home I went to their website and wrote a complaint. I got the answer back and they were sticking by the policy. I emailed them back and explained that my stomach could hold no more than 2 or 3 ounces and I didn't think their policy was fair. That even ordering from the kiddies menu it would be to much for me. I told them for that reason I would never be patronizing their restaurant again and would spread the word to all my friends. I feel like this is discrimination.
I don't understand how it is discrimination. You asked for a discount and they did not want to give one. They have every right to offer only discounts they choose to offer.
I used to manage a pizza place. People asked for discounts for all kinds of things. People that were in the military wanted discounts. Once two guys thought we should give them a discount because they were preachers. We gave discounts to local schools, like if they ordered pizzas for students, and one woman thought because she was a teacher there we should give her a discount when she ordered pizza for her family for dinner.
When a business sets its prices, they base it on the amount of food you get for that price. Not how much you're gonna eat. If I go to the grocery store and buy a box of Cheezits but only plan to eat half the box, the grocery store doesn't just charge me half price.
Some restaurants do us a favor and give us a discount. That's very nice of them. But they don't have to. It's not discrimination if they want to charge us their standard price. That's treating us like all other customers, not discriminating against us. It would actually be discriminating against people that haven't had WLS if they gave us a discount but didn't give it to them.

I'm afraid I'm with Kelly on this one. My stronger feeling is you devoted a lot of energy to voicing your opinion (which is good!)....but you're still upset........and I would let it go. I never cared how much I spent on food preop......the food was far more important than the value. I figured I out-ate lots of people at buffets etc. and now that I can't eat very much at all...the universe is sort of back in balance. You have every right to react any way you want.........don't get me wrong.......but I've found so many things that used to bother me just don't anymore........Susan

I don't think it is discrimination at all.. I think that they are just running a business. I mean I know i never offered to pay extra for a buffet when I ate more than a normal person.. I go to bob evans.. I just order a lunch size meal and eat it for a few days... I mean YES it would be nice if they would allow us to do that... but it just means we have a choice... to eat out or not to eat out....
Oh boy...this issue shows up every once in a while and always creates a flurry of interesting discussion.
But since you put it out there...I have to disagree with you.
I don't look at it as discriminatory at all.
These places are in it to make a profit. It is their business.
I would never dream of asking for special privileges because I had a weight problem and I made the decision to have gastric bypass.
That said, you are entitled to your opinion and certainly can make choices as to where you go out to eat.
I order appetizers or soup and take the rest home.
My surgeon's office gave me a card to use in restaurants to order small portions. I would never dream of using it. I just don't think it is their cross to bear. It is mine.
So I can either deal with the large portions...or eat at home!
Just my 2 cents!
(I'm sure there are many dollars yet to come!!)

Oh, stop whining. YOU chose to have surgery, and THEY had nothing to do with it. They're giving you exactly the same amount of food now that they did then---what YOU choose to do with it is none of their concern. Eat it, take it home, give it to the homeless---they don't care, nor should they.
They're in business to make money. The children's menu is stuff they sell at a loss, in order to get more adults to come there. Why should they feed YOU at a loss? It costs them just as much to prepare your plate, serve it, clean up after you, etc.whether you actually EAT the food or not.
Anybody who's not very hungry could walk in and tell them they'd had a gastric bypass and couldn't eat very much. Should they then give a discount to anyonme who asks?
It's NOT discrimination when they treat you JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

Many restuarants may give you a kiddie plate after RNY. But, generally it's up to management, or in your case was against company policy. Offering kiddie plates to adults who had surgery is a gesture from the restuarant for your future business. My surgeon offers those "cards" that indicate the patient had RNY surgery and could only eat small portions of food. I personally have had these cards denied twice. I even got asked "how do we know you didn't print this on your home computer?" Split meals with another person, or order from the appetizer meal. Life is too short to get upset by this. In fact, I had more restuarants deny the card than accept it. So, just stating you had surgery, may sound like a "fish tale" to the restuarant. Again, there is no unwritten law that any restuarant has to provide you with a kiddie meal menu after surgery. One woman at a support group meeting last night, related her experience in Las Vegas. She wanted to go through the buffet line at a casino. They actually asked her for her "card", and she was clueless. She even joked, and said she would unbutton her blouse and show them her surgical scars. DAVE

I sort of agree with the majority. We did choose to have surgery. Resturants are not obligated to give additional discounts or special treatment. At sit down resturants, I simply place my order and either take the rest home for another 3-4 meals. Or hubby and I share.
Now-at buffets-that's where I differ. I agree that it would be nice that we are allowed to pay the kid price or half price since most buffets are based on all you can eat. I eat less than my 3 year old son but he doesn't eat as much as my husband or 13 year old son. Buffets are where I would like to see something offered, but again they are in no way obligated to offer a discount and I get that.

We have a Chinese buffet here in town that offers the option of getting food in one of their to-go containers that they then weigh and you are charged by the weight. Can't go back for more, but you can take your leftovers home because you certainly paid for them!
