Vitamin Defiences!

An informed neurologist will know what to look for...a cooperating hematologist will fix what can be fixed.

PROBLEM IS...you needed to prevent this 6.5 years ago or start working on the corrections 3.5 years ago and at this point you MAY be experiencing some permanent damage...so you need to get informed professional help right away so that whatever might be reversable can be reversed asap.

Thank you for your reply! I have seen a neurologist for over 2 years now-actually 3  different neurologist. No one seems to care about the blood work. What will a hematologist do for me?? I haven't tried that yet!

I'm not very expereinced with this....but it does sound like you need to be ringing some phones getting people to hear that you are SICK!  I know that these deficiencies can cause permanent damage!  And if you do have permanent damage, some of it might be reversed!  If you are still having problems with your doctors, I would try to find a really good WLS doctor....as he would be more understanding of the seriousness of your problem and could direct you in the right directions and treatments!  As I said, I am not very knowledgable about this but this is the path that I would take!  My mother-in-law had the same issues after 3 years out from her RNY and she was treated through her WLS doctor.  Also, my husband had a severe B12 deficiency about a year ago and between a really good internal medicine doctor and a WLS doctor we now have it in control!  You just need to find a doctor that is going to understand the severity of your situation!

Do you mean they don't order it or that they don't seem impressed by the results?

No-they obviously don't take the blood work seriously. There have been times the blood work is okay-but then it goes haywire. And I don't do anything different. I just don't think they are educated. I'm going to the doctor on monday and  thursday of next week-2 different ones. I'm going to ask about a hematologist then. I guess the neuro isn't going to contact me about the bloodwor****il I  go on Thursday. It seems as if you complain much- they think your mental! I have complained for 3 years that I'm tired of being tired!! I used to walk 5 miles at times. Now-I'm lucky to walk around the house! Thanks for your input!!

Uhm...we don't CARE what they think.  We just find better-informed doctors when we encounter jerks.  Are you stuck in Logansport or can you go elsewhere...Indy or Louisville maybe?

Thank you for caring enough to reply! My neurologist referred me to Meridian Health Group- in Indy.  I go there Monday. They have a variety of doctors-nutritionist-I will ask to be referrred to a hematologist. I was only referred there for my tremors tho. But-maybe I can get some answers. We will see! Is the B12 nasal spray working for people?  Thanks again!

Okay, excuse my usually too-direct approach, but I don't see this as good news.  I went to that website...they seem to be a pain management place heavy with shrinks.

I did not see ONE neurologist.  And since it's a neurologist who sent you there, I suspect they wil assume that he knows what he's doing and that you have no neurological issues at all and that they will just help you adjust to the pain or drug up or figure out why you are imagining pain

Misdagnosis of this is not unheard of.  Really, one woman who was having B2 deficiences was on her way to electroshock therapy when they figured out it was a vitamin deficiency.

So, I'd be looking for another neurologist.  One whose head is not up his ass. One who doesn't think I'm crazy just because HE hasn't kept current with the literature in his field.

I'd send an email to every published neurologist on pubmed who DOES know the impact of post-bariatric issues and say something like:

Dear Dr. ____ ,

I am six years post-RnY and presenting with a constellation of neurological sypmtoms incuding severe essential tremor, and labs--such as Ferretin of 5.2 and B12 of 187 and equally disturbing results on other tests--that are all over the map.

I suspect that I need a neurologist who is familiar with the neurological complications of bariatric surgery to rule out a connection between the deficiencies and symptoms...or treat the deficiencies, not just the pain. Locally, that connection has not been made and i have been referred to a pain clinic.

As you have published on the topic of post-bariatric neurological complications, I'm hoping that you or an informed colleague can refer me to someone in the vicinity of Indianapolis who is familiar with the work that you and others have done in this field.

Thank you,

Jane Doe

Thanks again! I am very leary of going to this place also. I was sent there for the debilitating essential tremor and PTSD. Stress induces the tremors more. They  already told me I'm not there for pain managemment.  I have no pain! The reviews weren't the greatest reguarding the group. The Essential tremor is a disorder of the nervous system-that's why they sent me there. I have really never addressed the PTSD. I think- they think-if they medicate me for the depression-it will knock me down a notch-calm me. But-I can't afford to be knocked down-I barely function now! I stay in my pajama's week after week. I'm going to at least go there the first time-so they can't say I'm non-compliant with the treatment. I see the neurologist Thursday. After that-I'm moving on-unless I get some answers. I do know they  have a nutrionists. Supposedly-the doctor that I'm to see is familiar and deals with bariatric surgeries. I go there Monday. When I was assessed by the shrink for pre-approval to have the gastric bypass-she denied me the surgery due to PTSD and depression. Can you believe that? I was dumbfounded and furious!!!!! The doctor and I talked and he overrode her decision due to medical issues. Thank God!! My surgery was successful and others failed-he was proud  of my accomplishment. Again-thank you for your input. I don't take offense to what anyone says. Are you from Indiana?

Hubby is from Perry County.

I would seriously call my insurance group and tell them I need a second opinion neurologist who is NOT in the same group and that I do not think that keeping this appointment is in my best interest.

Acually, because I have  PPO, I'd just cancel and find a more informed neuro.
