Bleeding after menopause - Related to RNY?
Is vaginal bleeding after menopause (5 years ago) related to having recent gastric bypass? I had a RNY almost four weeks ago and began bleeding on yesterday. I also began exercising this week. Just wondering if it is related or a different situation. Will contact GNY after holiday on Tuesday. Thanks for any insight.

Please take this very seriously and call your gynecologist right away. My father was a surgeon. This would not likely be related to the RNY. Bleeding years after menopause is something to take very seriously. It can be a sign of cervical or uterine cancer. Please please call asap on Monday. After my dad died, my mother started bleeding several years after menopause. The doctor poo poo'd it and said it was likely due to either a recent kidney stone or the fact she was on a blood thinner. They didn't do anything till a year later when she continued to spot off and on. They finally did testing. By then, she had stage four cancer. It was too late to even treat. In talking after she died to s medical colleague who had worked with my dad, we found out the type of cancer she had could have been treated had they tested her and done aggressive treatment right away. Please call asap. INSIST on an abdominal ultrasound, CT, and an MRI. I don't want to scare you, but we lost our mom because we didn't take it seriously.
It is from the sudden increase in estrogen being released from the fat cells. I had the same thing happen. I was in post-menapause due to weight gain. Now I have a period again, but I had freaky bleeding after surgery. I did go to my GYN and he said it was normal. Just check with your dr just in case.
The rush of hormones in your system might be the culprit... I'd have safe sex at this point.... it's actually possible for you to get pregnant, even though you thought you were done with all that stuff.
I'd also call your gynacologist to make sure something nefarious isn't going on.... just in case.

I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
Please call your GYN ASAP. It is not normal after our surgery to bleed if you are post op but can be a sign of a gynecological problem and hopefully not but it can be a sign of uterine or cervical cancers. I had my last period the day of my surgery which was October 2008. Then out of the blue the first week of May 2010 I woke up one morning bleeding. I thought it was weird because I know my GYN and Endo told me that once I went a year without a period that I was done and I also had blood work that said I was done. So, I called my GYN immediately and she had me come in that day. She did an emergency uterine biopsy and thank goodness it was negative. She also sent me for a transvaginal sonogram and that showed an ovarian cyst and thickening of my uterine wall. These are normal findings for someone that still gets there period but they aren't normal for a post menopausal person. She said I have to repeat the tests 3 months later. I am actually over due for the repeat test which I willl call to schedule next week. If the cyst and thickening are still there then I will have to have further testing and possibly have to have the cyst removed.
So, don't put the bleeding off. It means something and needs to be checked out.

Well, it *could* be related, but is not all that likely. It's also not likely ( unless it's really significant bleeding, as in bright red and flowing) to be a super urgent thing. But I learned the hard way that if it's bright red and keeps going that it's IMPORTANT and shouldn't be put off. We're talking anything that does more than way stain your panties or drip in the toilet, If you would fret and apply pressure on your outer skin and it's coming out your vagina, it's significant and should not wait, especially if it really is red and not funky brown-icky-odd-smeary. If this is happening you'll know what I mean.
If you were just a year or maybe two out from your last period, I'd be more sanguine. Five years is a long time. Yeah, you might be just fine, but you might NOT be fine. Vaginal bleeding could come from anywhere and needs to be evaluated quickly. Better safe than sorry.
