Medic Alert ID for WL?
As a VSGer and a nurse I have no intention of wearing one. It's a stupid waste of money. The tube used is so soft and flexible there is no way it is going to cause damage. It would be similar to pushing a straw to your fingertip. Just how much damage can you really do?

As a nurse, have you been trained on how to properly insert the various tubes that go to the stomach?
If so, what is the instruction if while inserting a 'blind' tube some obstruction is encountered?
Perhaps you know this: I've seen film of my 'pouch' and pouch overstates the issue. It appears to be a straight line, no way a tube would hit any part of it. I have no doubt a tube could go further down my throat than a Non-Op. Are most/all pouches this way? Or are some created at some weird angle that could cause an issue?
Oh, and Hi!
PS: How would emergency staff react to a "No Sugar" line on a bracelet?

Yes, I have one.
But I also have reactive hypoglycemia (fun!) and neurocardiogenic shock (TRIPLE FUN!!!) so the possibility of me passing out? Very possible.
With that said, when I update my new bracelet, it will say NSAID ALLERGY as many docs don't understand that IV and IM NSAIDS (namely Torradol) are just as bad (if not worse) than oral meds and will force it on you. I've had this happen to me, and IV Torradol is what gave me my first 3 ulcers, so I have no desire to go down that road again.

EMT's and medical personnel are being trained to look in cell phones for "ICE" (In case of emergency)
So in my I put my husbands name/phone number and RNY gastric bypass, no blind ng tube or nsaids.
I debated on whether to get necklace/bracelet etc but the honest truth is, I won't wear it. I like the idea of taping something to the back of my drivers license.
It's too bad that everything has to be a debate. No need to crawl up someones arse for having different opinions and such.

Thank You everyone for all your assistance. I do feel that it is an individual decision and if it makes me feel better, I will wear one. After reading all the responses, I guess what I need to figure out is what I need to have for info on it. Here in Canada, I see that WLS isn't as popular in regards to our provincial nurses line info and will research it more. I am also waiting for a response from the ambulance service. Have a great weekend! :)
I plan on getting one of these in the near future. Based on an experience I had in the ER a few months back. If I was not conscious, lord knows what they would have done to me. The nurses and doctors were CLUELESS about what to do and not do with a WLS patient.
I think the thing that ****** me off is when people belittle those who do choose to wear one of these. This is our life that could be on the line...don't make a joke out of something others may feel is important. One of my biggest pet peeves!

I agree. There are some amazing doctors and nurses out there for sure, or we wouldn't have WLS if they couldn't be trusted. For us, we choose who we want, in an emergency you get whomever is on staff. Not everyone is perfect, but to keep them informed is something I can do on my part not to stress the medical staff and assist in my own treatment. Thanks Hazelnut!
The thing is for me anyway, if you are unconsious- they have no idea about you medical history unless you have the info on you somehow. I have a med ID bracelet and all of my info on a card in my wallet. I CHOOSE to follow my drs instructions and wear one. WHY do you take offense to that. Just let it go already. If it makes a person more comfortable to wear a med ID bracelet then they should do so. I never leave the house without it.
I don't understand why it upsets you that people have a different opinion than you. Just let it go already. Just agree that some people agree and some don't agree with you.

I wear a bracelet when I leave the house. It states that I am gastric bypass, diabetic and allergic to penicillin. I wear it because I have had several episodes of reactive hypoglycemia and I don't want to be mistaken as someone drunk if it ever happens out in public. I was always fine with Penicillin until 2 years ago...suddenly, my breathing was affected and even my feet swelled up in huge hives...my friend, the friendly school nurse, stuck me with an epi pen. What could happen next time? I don't want to find out!
I'm with the others, I just feel better having it on. I really don't think an nsaid would kill me but Penicillin? Maybe? Also, I don't feel good about these episodes with reactive hypoglycemia, last time, I had no symptoms and my friend, friendly school nurse again, called and said..."you sound drunk...check your blood sugar"! It was 20!! I don't remember much after that until I was better. For now, I'll wear mine...maybe later I won't need it. Connie
