No TAN is SAFE.

The mole had formed on the top edge of a larger freckle that I had for ever. He thought it prudent to remove the whole freckle for safety sake. I found a photo pre-surgery of the freckle.

I must admit being so fair skinned, I wasn't going to argue.

That's why we have to go to a dermatologist every year - I would never have thought twice about what I can see in that pic.

DH and I sometimes end up having bits and pieces snipped off after these appointments.  I've had a cyst and a couple of odd verrucas removed (that's a much prettier word for a warty-type growth), none from sun-exposed areas (who gets a wart on the nape of the neck??).  DH has had a skin cancer, a cyst and several raised moles removed, just to be on the safe side.  We're on a first-name basis with the dermatologist, even though we TRY not to go that often, and never for anything remotely cosmetic.  I guess as we grow older, other stuff grows too!

I'm assuming that pic demonstrates tan-in-a-tube abuse.

I have always gone out in the sun, because I tan nicely.  (I'm half Hungarian.)  California girl, baby oil, the whole 9.  Every year, get a slight sunburn as a base at the beginning of summer, then tan with abandon.

I still get as much sun as I can, though I do put on sunscreen if I'm going to be out more than 40 min or so, especially around the pool.  (Never used a tanning bed though.)  And I have to be more careful because I seem to burn more easily now.  But cumulativelly, it is starting to show - I have spots on my face, and probably will start getting them zapped off with a laser or something.  My arms are a bit spotty too, as are the top of my shoulders - thankfully, my chest is still OK.

DH was fairhaired before he went prematurely silver.  He worked construction his whole life (like, starting at age 5!) until his early 40s, always out in the sun with no shirt.  His face shows the wrinkles (he also used to smoke a lot), but it is his arms, shoulders and back that have lots of brown spots and actinic keratoses.  We watch them closely, but there are far too many to remove for the sake of how they look.

So, guess where he got a squamous cell carcinoma?  (On a scale of 1-10, basal cell is a 1, squamous is a 3, melanoma is a 10 in terms of seriousness.)

In his pubes, waaaay below the beltline, where the sun NEVER shone.  It got a good start, because he thought it was an infected hair follicle, and being a manly man, wouldn't go get it checked out until I got REALLY concerned.  It took a year to eradicate, because the dermatologist first tried to use daily applications of 5-FU (a topical chemotherapeutic) to kill it, and then it took two excisions, the second with a wider margin, to get it all.  It has been 6 years or so, so I think it's done.

So, we are on a yearly schedule with the dermatologist - we do our own "mole patrols" of each other (which can be fun), and then have them confirmed by the derm.  He thinks we are funny and kind of cute, because we go for our yearly with him together, and point out spots on each other that we want him to look at.  We try to keep him amused.

 SCARY!!!

In highschool I tanned ALL the time... I got dark,  but I've always had a redish tone to my skin, never got GOLDEN brown..

Summertime I have to use sunblock.. My skin burns easily, even if I have a decsent tan.

I made the choice when I was about 19 that I would rather be white as a ghost during those non-summer months and have nice skin when I get older than look un-natural during the winter and have a tan. I live in North Dakota for gosh sakes... Tans in the winter aren't natural!!!

I will admit during the summer I get a little jealous of  the rest of my family.. they all tan very well and then there's me... not soo much! Dad says it's all that Norweigan blood I have in me.. funny thing he's 100% and I'm only 50%!

If I want a tan I will pay for a spray one or buy some good quality product. I hate being hot anyways and that's why I never liked the tanning beds!!
