HELP! Liver Tests are very very high

I went through all of this to improve my health. My diabetes is in remission, my cholesterol is great and I'm very very active now.

Did my 9 month lab work and the surgeon's office called to tell me that my liver enzymes have doubled since my 6 month lab work. I don't have the results in front of me, I haven't even seen them, so I don't know what the exact numbers are, but it's stressing me out. And I have to follow up with a doctor who knows nothing about me because I had to break up with mine over insurance.

Here's what I know from my past:

1- I was on Avandia 12 years ago for a couple months. This is when my first liver test showed abnormally high results

2- When I first started testing high, I had gained about 100 pounds ina very short period of time

3- The GI doc I saw at the time told me that I most likely had a fatty liver and that it was caused by rapid weight gain or loss, both would do it

4- It took close to 10 years for my levels to come back down to normal

5- January of 2010 I was put on Januvia, and got very very ill. I had to have an abdominal ultrasound and they told me my liver was massively enlarged. I was taken off of the Januvia and my levels remained high, but better

Okay, so if it's fatty liver and I just really annoyed it by losing 95 pounds over the past 10 months, why is my surgeon concerned? Wouldn't this be something he has seen before? Frequently even?
6- I don't drink
7- I barely use tylenol anymore
8- i've been vaccinated for hep b,
9-with my RNY he also took out my gall bladder.

So where does this put me? Has anyone else been in this situation?

thanks :) Hopefully it's just a fatty liver that got annoyed by surgery and stupid diabetes meds

In the past couple of months, I went to the doctors complaining about a sinus infection and feeling really wiped out.  He ran some blood work and found that my iron was slightly elevated but my ferritin level was through the rough  (normal is 225 mine was 755).  He did some blood work and sent me to a hematologist, where the was more blood work ordered and a scat scan down of my abdomen and pelvis.  Both doctors were trying to rule out hepatitis a,b,.& c.  Since I don't have a gallbladder,  they didn't have to worry about that.  I've lost over 170 lbs so it's not a fatty liver.  I don't smoke nor drink.    It turns out that I have a disease called hereditary hemochromatosis.  It's where the body builds up to much iron and doesn't leave.  If I don't go to an gastroendocrinolosist to withdraw blood every so often,  it's going to make my body go in iron overload.  I read that this is a common disease among people with European-Caucasian ancestry.  As they say in Ireland:"It's better the devil that you know!"  At least I know what I'm dealing with and make the necessary adjustment.

I wish I had the results so I could see my iron/ferritin... I take the celebrate multi with iron which gives me a total of 36mg of iron a day....

thanks for sharing, I hope things get better for you as well.

losing a lot of weight doesn't exclude you from possbile fatty liver, rapid weight loss will also put fat deposits on your liver according to the gastroenterologist I saw years ago. I wondered off and on if she told me that just so I wouldn't do anything drastic like anorexia to get rid of it. I just found this to back her up:

Risk factors

By Mayo Clinic staff

A wide range of diseases and conditions can increase your risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, including:

  • Certain medications
  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • High cholesterol
  • High levels of triglycerides in the blood
  • Malnutrition
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Obesity
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Toxins and chemicals, such as pesticides
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Wilson's disease
Oops. I think I have or had at least half of those

One of the recommendations that the hemotologist was get a vitamin without iron.  Before, I did that, my actual iron level was over 60.  Now,  with ironless vitamins,  my iron level is at 33. What both doctors are concerned about is the ferritin.  I  also forgot to mention the scat scan showed my liver being normal.  Because of a botched job from my wls surgeon,  the wls surgeon cut off a small lobe of my liver because it fused together with my small intestine.  That was all do to complications from my rny.

Oh geez that is insanity!

I've also never had my iron checked prior to surgery (or ferritin for that matter), so I will probably call the coordinator back and ask her about the ferritin level, thanks for the advice :) ((hugs))

Good Luck to you.  Doesn't it feel  like we've been on a rollacoaster ride with our iron levels?  All my levels were within normal before.  The only 2 things that were slightly elevated were my triglycerides and sugar (I was boarder line diabetic),  Now, everything is normal except for my iron/ferriton.  Go figure. :) ((hugs to you also))

pcp is making me schedule an abdominal ultrasound as well... prep on the paperwork say no food/drink for 8 hours, how did you handle that?

I don't have any idea as to why this is happening, but I do have a suggestion:  try using a milk thistle supplement - it's been shown to be highly effective at restoring the liver, even in alcoholics.
