I am on day 8 here and I am so frustrated about the protein thing. I feel like I am eating to many calories and just can't do it. I don't plan on this failing me. I have been big all my life and I would not have put myself through this to fail. Do any of you have any ideas as to what would be good protein for me right now since I am still on pureed foods? i have shakes and yogurt and I also have some syntrax nectar on its way and it should be easier with that but I'm beside myself here. I don't want to eat either. I could care less about food but I know I have to. Any ideas welcome...I was thinking about getting some small cans of beenee weenies..Would that be ok?

Relax. You just had surgery a week ago. What you need is HYDRATION. Fluids. You don't need any food just yet. You need to get in 64 oz. of fluids daily. Work on that.

Beenie weenies are not food. They are crap.

Thanks Elizabeth. I just don't want to mess this up..i've wanted it for so long and finally had it. I will try to concentrate on the water and forget other things..The water really does satisfy me anyway.

You're going to be fine. Look at it this way (for now): You can live on no food for a very long time, but about three days withou****er. Always keep that in mind. Your highest priority on intake must always and forevermore be hydration. Later you will need to also keep in mind that you are NOT to starve yourself. This is NOT about living on 500 calories a day forever or even for anything beyond the short term. If you try to live on nothing once it's time to eat, then you will destroy your metabsolism and derail your weight loss.

For now, though, nobody expects you to eat much of anything. Just HYDRATE. Start adding nibbles of pureed stuff along the way, but focus on whatever fluids will work (as allowed by your plan). The best thing you can drink, now and forever, is plain water.

thanks to you both for all of your input. I guess I am expecting too much out of myself so soon. I will stick to the things I know i can handle like applesauce, pudding shakes and popsicles and let the rest come as I can handle more. I luv my popsicles. I am going to sonic tomorrow and get me a bag of crushed ice from there. I love just plain ol ice too. I live on that in the hospital for 2 days and got used to it. I can eat on that constantly and keep myself hydrated that way and it is easier that trying to drink too much water at once. I'm glad I have you all to come to for support cause right now I sure need it.

Hi Tracy,

Congratulations on your surgery!!

Hang in there with the protein thing as it's a gradual coming.  I think there were very few of us who could actually get all our fluids and proteins in those first weeks following surgery.

Really push yourself each day to get as much as you can in, and then push harder the next day and before you know it you'll be where you need to be.

As for the beanie weenies... not even a good question to ask.  So, I'm going to put it back to you because you have really got to begin thinking about what you actually should and should not be eating.  Not what you could be eating...

So Tracy, do you really think you should be eating beanie weenies?  I think you know what the answer is to that.  If not, you should immediately make an appointment with a nutritionist and get your head wrapped around good dietary choices; otherwise, you are not going to be successful with this surgery.

Wishing you a very successful passage!!

You could always add protein powder to your pudding and/or yogurt.  I use Beneprotein...no flavor...I add it to pudding/yogurt/soup/stew...anything to up my protein intake.

I think your fear of failure is perfectly normal...I'm one year out, down 170lbs and still worry about gaining it all back.  I'm really working on my physiological problems that caused me to overeat to begin with...hopefully resolving those will prevent future regain.  I would suggest that you work with your NUT on how much you should be eating and how often...then try to stick to that.  And of course as others have already stated...drink your water!

Thanks again for the input. I didn't really think the beenee weenies were a good choice I just know they have protein and I wasn't sure. I am doing my best right now and can usually get at least 50-60 grams of protein in per day so far. I just get so frustrated with it. I feel like I am having to push something down my throat constantly these days and before surgery I was barely able to eat at all. I just don't want the food anymore. I wake up in the morning and know I have to eat but I am NOT hungry at all!!! I see my surgeon next Wednesday and I will talk to my nutritionist while I am there. I know things will get better but being a newie can have some stress..lol

Hello Tracy!!!

The protein shakes are the best way to get your protein in right now. Do you have a little blender??
I took a little bit of re fried beans tonight and thinned them with some water, then blended them in my magic bullet. Yum...they were good. That was the first real food I've had since before the surgery.
I think that you are gonna do fine. I am very much like you in that if I'm not sure, I will post and ask the veterans. Believe me, they will help us and let us know if we are doing the wrong things. That's one of the reasons I love OH!!
