Took 3 dulcolax...then read reviews...freakingg out
If you are that constipated, a single dose of Dulcolax is only going to start the process going. You can take as many as six (though I would NOT recommend it!), so don't worry about three - that's what the box tells you to take. You may have some cramping, but you'll also have immediate relief once you go.
For constipation that bad, you'll want to take the dulcolax (in smaller doses, if you wish, once you get things started) to get ALL of the log jam out. It can take at least a few days. If you're ONLY having loose, watery output at first, keep taking the Dulcolax. You want to take it until you're passing the hard stuff, too. The liquidy stuff is what you've eaten most recently. The harder the stool is, the longer it's been in there. So you need to get lots of the "logs" out to get true relief.
Once you know you've cleared it all (maybe in four or five days?), you should switch to something gentler for another two weeks or so (like Miralax). If you just stop the Dulcolax suddenly, everything will just grind to a halt again. The miralax is gentle, but will help keep things moving and sort of "retrain" your bowels to keep things moving. Then, when you want to stop the Miralax, you taper off instead of just stopping cold turkey. Take a little bit less for a few days, then even less for a few more, until you're barely taking anything. Then you can stop.
I hope that helps. I should add that I'm a medical transcriptionist who does a TON of GI work, and this - sadly - is a common topic of my work!
